Worthy homecoming for bullied teen

By Carl Azuz, CNN

(CNN) – At Ogemaw Heights High School, one student shocked by the announcement of homecoming court was a girl named to be on it.

Whitney Kropp was not the most popular student at her West Branch, Michigan school. Described by the Detroit News as a “free spirit,” Kropp, with her bleached hair and alternative style, says she had been picked on in the past.

She’d shaken it off like so many others do, but the bullying she’d faced reached a new low earlier this month, when some of her classmates decided that nominating an unpopular girl to the traditionally popular court would be a good prank.

Kropp, of course, wasn’t in on the joke. When she heard her name announced in connection with homecoming, she was elated. Her mother said it never crossed Whitney’s mind that it could’ve been a prank; the 16-year-old was too happy.

Shortly after she discovered the truth that night, her mother found her in tears.

At the very least, Kropp was planning to skip homecoming. She said she’d felt betrayed and that she wasn’t a worthy student at Ogemaw Heights High.

Her mother and some of her friends had a different take: They told her to go to the dance anyway - that it would be the best way to get back at those who’d bullied her.

Kropp decided they were right. So did her community.

As word of the prank got around quickly in Kropp’s small town, her phone started ringing. People were calling just to encourage her.

Then, local businesses stepped in. One offered to cover the cost of Kropp’s homecoming dress. Another started planning her dinner. A local salon is picking up the cost of her hair, her makeup, her nails, and “anything else she wants,” according to the owners.

“Because so many people came together…it just turned right around,” said Bernice Kropp, Whitney’s mother.

And it didn’t stop at the borders of West Branch. A former student posted a support video on YouTube. Kropp’s sister and friends started a Facebook page. (As of this posting, the “Support Whitney Kropp” site has more than 50,000 likes. The student’s community has a population of 2,100.)

The school district is currently investigating the incident, and the superintendent says that any form of bullying is unacceptable.

As for where Kropp stands now, she says this will make a difference to victims of bullying.  And she's looking forward to this weekend, when she'll represent her sophomore class at homecoming.

I think that the school needs to suspend the people that were bulling whitney and She should sue them for 1 million dollars for all the trouble she went through. She should have told the teacher the first time and if they kept bullying her,she should have fought back or talk about them to make their feelings hurt.If you are getting bullied and you want to put all that nonsense behind you just try to play sports or do something good in your life.

This article should encourage individuals who are getting bullied to not be intimidated by people who you dont fit in with. It's ok if you don't fit in with certain people or groups because you don't all ways need friends. Whitney is a strong teenager in my opinion because she didn't let that incident stop her from going to homecoming. The people who did that are childish and very immature. They shouldn't even be called teenagers because they are still in there kidzone. They need to learn how to be mature

I think if everybody knew that it was a prank to go to Homecoming, an adult should have done something about it. However, I am happy that Whitney took the risk and went to Homecoming any way.

Whitney, you are soo beautiful and i like the way how you went to homecoming even when you knew it was a prank. God bless those in your city or town that helped you get ready for homecoming. I think that any sign of bullying is wrong because you shouldn't pick on a for any apparent reason. Majority of the time bullies pick on a child because he or she is jealous of the victim. Bullying is a nationwide act that could become a serious crime.

Great job,Whitney! You stood up for what you believe in and for yourself, too.Students should feel encouraged to talk to parents. If not, they should speak with an adult they can trust. Continue to stand up for yourself,Whitney.

I feel sorry for Whitney because she found out she got pranked the night of the homecoming. She didn't even do anything to the bullies. The bullies just did the prank for fun, which is wrong. I say that because if the bullies got bullied they would feel the same way Whitney felt.

I think this needs to be more handled because to everyone this is an International problem. We all need to come together and solve this as one.We should now talk to all student's about this.We should check groups and see what they are all about.Students should feel encouraged to talk to, parents if not them then anyone they know they can trust.

I think that she did the right thing by going to homecoming even when she knew it was a prank. It was also very nice how the town helped her out and for the people that thought it was a prank were very surprised when she showed up.

In the Mid 70's, the Cheerleaders at my high school wanted me to be in their group. I would not be able to associate with anyone that was an outsider to their group.

This also meant being mean to a teen that had a grossly severe case of acne. I told them "NO, I will not be a part of your group!!" These kind of people are Mean Spirited and should be punished!!

Whitney, I believe what you had done inspired so many people to stand up to bullies. I too was bullied, but wasn't an inspiration to anyone. But you have inspired me to not only stand up to bullies that bullied me, but to stand up to bullies that bully others. So for that, I thank you for you courage, and maybe someday I will have that courage like you.

There parents should had disciptined them from young to stop stuff like this. I understand that some parents dont spend alot of time with there kids but the time they do spend with them they should teach them right from wrong.

Whitney: Bravery is hard to come by – no matter what they say or what is said – God made you equal – NEVER forget it! We lament the conditions of students out there – parents are not teaching values of doing unto others. Sadly, too many times the good, the meek, the quiet goes un-noticed. It's time to realize the good in all humanity and to let the rest lay. Underlying "popularity" there's huge portions of insecurity! Many people do care... stay humble and true to yourself!!!!

If a majority of the girl's classmates voted her in (I'm assuming most of the class bothered to vote) then it couldn't have just been a little clique of lizard bait that engineered the whole thing. At least some (maybe a lot) of the people who voted for her must have sincerely wanted her to win.

    • ducss750

You underestimate the evil that is high school. It IS entirely possible. School of 2100, her class is probably around 500, assume around 20-30% voting gives you 100-150 voters. IF there were only 2 candidates a majority would be 51-76, if there were 4 candidates a voting pool of less than 20 would do it.
20 malicious teens are highly possible. If they are the 'popular' clique they influence others in ways adults can not even comprehend. High school has not been poodle skirts, sockhops and brotherly love in decades, if ever.

      September 28, 2012 at 4:45 pm |
      • Nan

You are so right about the "if ever" comment...in the days of poodle skirts/sock hops...the "in" crowd was still the in crowd...It was in more subtle form but it still existed...There was the in crowd and the ones who had to make their own way...I happen to think WE did just fine!

You are WAY off, but good thought. The whole TOWN is 2,100. That means the school is probably only 200 (and her senior class maybe 50) unless it is a consolidated district. If all 9-12 get to vote, it would still take only a few spreading the word to get her voted in. And it is not explained how many are on the court. If 5 or 6, then it is possible to get the "popular girls in AND the joke girl. I somehow doubt the bullies will be embarrassed or regretful. Might make a good movie, but I have already seen it. Called Carrie.

I was nominated for home coming queen as a prank when I was a senior way back in 1985. When one of the pranksters' friends told me about it, I went and had my name withdrawn. I never understood why this one small group of girls always had it out for me. I admire Ms. Kropp's resolve to see this through and turn the tables

Bullying is based on the bully's weakness. Maybe they saw a strenght in you that scared them, maybe they needed to feel superior to someone because they felt so inferior inside. One thing I have learned in my long life, bullies are never strong, confident people, never met one that ever amounted to anything!

Blowing this out of proportion will make the whole high school bully Whitney Way more in the future because the vast majority of people from Ogemaw are sick of the negative publicity. I disagree completely. Bullies need to get negative publicity and hate mail usually comes their way. They need to be held accountable for their actions. She may be bullied more, but she has 93,000 people behind her on facebook, and I am one of them. F*** the bullies.

I completely agree with you Megan – the last thing a bully wants is to be called out. Most are complete cowards and their only source of self-esteem is putting others down. It's time for people to step forward and say enough is enough!

No, Parent of Two, the last thing a bully wants is to to be called out into a lonely alley and get his/her @$$ kicked six ways from Sunday by a would-be victim who's parent(s) have taught him/her how to gain his/her respect. I cannot believe that so many people in this country agree that freedom is not free, but balk at the idea that respect sometimes has to be hard-earned.

This person is probably one of the people bullying others. To say that the media coverage is bad is just plain wrong. Anyone caught bullying another should be brought out into the spotlight and pointed out. See if they then can continue their cowardly ways while everyone is watching.

The kids who bully, all their behavior stems from horrible parenting. To the parents of bullies, seriously, this isn't high school anymore: Stop living vicariously through your kids, and teach them some fricking manners and respect for their fellow human beings. And to the schools who keep turning a blind eye to the kids who continually get hurt within your schools, start doing something! If a parent can't be there to assist their child, it's your job to ensure the safety of our kids.

Bullying happens way too often and it comes in many forms, not just your standard perception of it where the person is physically or verbally being bullied. Bullying can be categorized in many ways and this is an example of bullying even if it wasn't directly to the bullied person's face. By saying mean words to the kids who did this to her, we are no better than the original bulliers. They do need to learn from their mistakes but they don't deserve to be bullied about what they did either. It would be a vicious cycle if that happened. Whitney did not deserve to be bullied and no one else does either.

I feel that bullying is a nationwide act.In the article the superintendent said he would "handle it " and said "any form of bullying is unacceptable".Thousands of kids are bullied yearly, and only a few get recognition. Bullying wont be stopped by everyone, it can only be stopped by strong people. Bullying can lead to several thing such as suicide, depression, and can become anti-social. Its horribly sad how someone would want to take their own life do to the effects of someones comment. If people are bothering you, take control of it. You let that person talk to you like that from the beginning, you should have put your foot down.

Bullies and bigots are just self-hating cowards who want to try to make other people as miserable as themselves. Living well is the best revenge.

I only hope that someday when all of these kids are grown up, this girl will be able to look back at these sheople (and all bullies really are just sheople) and pity them. Sheople never grow, never develop, never change as individuals, and at best, turn into pundits (pick your side, it's irrelevant). Good luck to her.

This is *SO* not news. This isn't even really bullying. so what? A teen was embarrassed by other teens. Didn't anyone else go to high school? Stuff like this...stuff MUCH meaner than this...happens every day. In every state. Yes, our precious little kids can be mean to each other. This surprises...anyone?

This is not news. It shouldn't even be news for her little town, much less CNN.

Chuck, you were obviously the bully in high school. Would it have been bullying had the young lady went home and killed herself because she was so distraught? You obviously have no idea what are youth are facing everyday. Apparently your parents never taught you compassion. You are a jerk for even commenting. Like she needs to see people like you commenting. She is a kid!! She shouldn't have to hear this stuff from adults.

Lol, Chuck is probably feom West Branch! As a resident here who had to take her son out of school because of bullying, a good portion of the parents in this town are just as bad if not worse than their bully kids!!

    • iammeyouareyou

This is NOT bullying. This is called "real life". Get used to it. Bullying has occurred for as long as there have been schools. Most kids learn to get through it. This is how people learn to live with others. Some people suck, some are nice. You cannot ignore the sucky people, because they will always be around you. Learn to live with them and deal with them. Bullying is not a crime, UNTIL the bully breaks a real law on the books. Then it is a matter for the police.

      September 26, 2012 at 7:12 pm |
      • A. Dixon

Does it become a crime when a child takes their own life after being bullied? Tell the parents who have lost children (or almost lost children) that it's no big deal. Have fun with that...

        September 26, 2012 at 7:41 pm |
      • Johnno

        iammeyouareyou,
In this instance the girl was falsely nominated, but the article did not mention the additional bullying she has suffered throughout the year, and so this may only be the topper. By the way I was bullyed in school until I took karate classes so that I could beat the hell out of my abusers. BUT the truth about bullying is that the kids are being hit, smacked, kicked, locked up in lockers etc. and once you lay your hands on another you ARE breaking the law. So if you're okay with kids bullying other kids then after they are aressted for assault you should be locked up right along with them.
P.S. I dare you to come and try your bullying with me today, because besides my karate training I am a retired Marine !!!

        September 26, 2012 at 7:57 pm |
      • truebob

Someone who will take their own life will find a reason unless their underlying mental health issues are addressed. Picking on a normal person will not cause them to kill themselves or 75% of my graduating class would have been dead by junior year.

        September 26, 2012 at 8:01 pm |
      • Destinee

Bullying in school IS a crime in 49 states. Check bullypolice.org to see about your state. Expecting kids to learn to live with them and DEAL with them is excellent advice. How we deal with them is to not to tolerate the behavior.

        September 28, 2012 at 2:22 pm |
    • eliewriter

Oh, Chuckie, Chuckie, Chuckie, it's news alright. Everyone loves a story about defeating the dark side of the force, aka the bullies.

And yes, this is bullying–do you really not know what bullying means? Whether it's dunking someone in the loo or trying to humiliate your co-worker, it's bullying. Chances are the people who don't recognize bullying are the ones most guilty of it. Some unfortunate losers never figure it out; others go along knowing it's wrong.

The fact that this has gone national (Whitney's name has taken over the first several pages of Google search results) will hopefully help these kiddies decide whether they want to be lifelong bullies or choose to live worthwhile lives. I hope all of them suck up the embarrassment, give Whitney a genuine apology and learn from the incident.

My guess is that chuck was a meat headed jock. With comments like his it's pretty apparent he was never on the receiving end of anything in high school. I also agree with a previous poster. I was picked on, etc in High School. I was the art/sci fi geek. Now thanks to the magic of social media, I've been able to check up on all the popular kids.
Yeah, fat, balding, beer bellies with dead end careers. 99% of them. Looks like I got the last laugh. My mantra is this: I would have rather had a horrible 4 years of high school and have the rest of my life amazing (which is what happened) then have 4 short years of glory and the rest of my life a monotonous pilgrimage towards death....

It's not difficult to figure out that you were a bully. Now that people have figured out that bullies are the least confident of all people, you and all other bullies are pathetic jokes. And it is easy to infer from your writing that you hope to minimize what you have done in hopes that people won't think you are a pathetic joke. It didn't work.

Wow! What a bunch of hypocrites. All this talk about anti-bullying and yet there is bullying going on here. Chuck just stated his opinion on the subject and everybody found the need to up and start calling names. "Jerk" this and "not a clue" that. How do you know Chuck didn't get upset and hurt by your name calling (bullying)? How is it you people feel a "prank" where a girl gets elected into Homecoming is bullying and all your name calling isn't? Wow! You people need to really think about what you think bullying really is. This was a prank? She won didn't she? Oh, you better watch out Ashton Kutcher. You can't punk anyone anymore because it might be perceived as bullying.

I hate bullies. In elementary school, about 35 years ago, we had a girl, Charlotte, who tried to bully everyone, except me, probably because I was mean. One day after school she was picking on, Karla, a classmate of mine. I could not stand it. I finally stepped in and made her stop. I don't remember all the details but I know I wasn't scared. I just knew I had to stop it. To this day I always take up for the underdog...

Bullying should be treated like property crimes committed by minors are in most states – hold the parents responsible. If the parents found themselves having to attend classes and seminars and subjected to the "labelling" they taught their little monsters, they might think twice about "kids just being kids."

    September 26, 2012 at 6:01 pm |
    • ishy

That is a great idea...parents need to be involved in their kids lives and held resposible for their actions. Teach your kids to love and respect not hate.

      September 26, 2012 at 7:00 pm |
    • A. Dixon

Love It! Making parents responsible for their children with fines and classes may not seem "fair" but growing up, the trouble that I would get into where my parents had to be notified, called-in, speak to teachers, etc was ALWAYS the worst. It happened once when I skipped half a day and after meeting the back of my mother's hand a few times (not abusive...but did not spare the rod), I never skipped class again. I didn't fear anyone or anything as much as I feared the wrath of my mother.

There's an old story of a man walking beside a river and seeing children flying by in the strong current, barely able to keep their heads above water. The man jumps in and starts hauling them out to safety. He is joined by other adults, and soon, they are pulling dozens of kids to safety. Suddenly, instead of rescuing more kids, the first man starts walking away. People shout to him, "Hey! Where are you going?!". Without looking back he says, "I'm going upstream to stop whomever is throwing children in the water."

We can have all sorts of meetings, rules and edicts about bullying and what to do after it has taken the health and well-being of a child. What we seem unwilling and unready to do, is to deal with the bullies themselves. I propose mandatory mental health evaluations for a bully and the bully's family. After all, something has certainly got to be amiss with a bully and his or her homelife, and perhaps investigation at the source of the trouble will help the bully as well as stopping future epidodes of bullying.

You are an a**clown, and through your dim views, part of the problem. Give the kid a break, what is wrong with you?

Sounds like they have some real jerks at that school, and probably some lousy parents too.

In my experience most bullies grow out of it and find compassion as they get older. Or they turn out to be complete losers. At my high school it was a guy named Comer, he was a physical bully as he was not too bright. By our 5 year reunion he was working on his second divorce. I don't think life worked out so good for him.

    What goes around comes around.

She won with 17 votes out of 190...it wasn't like she was singled out by the whole class. It was a fluke. She was accidentally voted in by 17 kids who didn't care who they elected.

Lttle kid bullies grow up to be adult bullies. They're just a fact of life and everyone just has to learn to deal with them. Good on these folks 'cuz it's the only way to get past the bullying. Bullying will NEVER be completely eliminated. The school's hand are tied prertty tight these days when it come to disciplining students. Teachers/Administrators can barely even breathe in a kid's direction for threat of a lawsuit from some namby pamby parent who that thinks they're little preciously perfect bundle of joy could never, ever be a bully.

Actually, 'once a bully, always a bully' is not true. I was a bully in elementary school and grew out of it. Also, there are a number of other ways to deal with bullying. Always, ever, only, etc.....pretty easy to refute, it only takes one.

This > "when some of her classmates decided that nominating an unpopular girl to the traditionally popular court would be a good prank."

So.. I need to ask. In their eyes she was unpopular? In my experience if you are "popular" – it's because of the wealth of your parents trickling down to you as you wear the best, ride in the best – but honestly, what your parents worked hard for.... well it defines them.. not you. Except to say you are riding on their coat tails and I just can't respect a person that does that.

I like the kids that can stand on their own merit. What they did, what they accomplished. Well known never meant that much to me.. popular even less.... As far as bullies go – how can any respect someone that has to tear a person down > in order to build themselves up....

Actually, I know lots of kids who had money from their parents but weren't terribly popular. Then, I knew kids with little money in the family and they were popular. It all depends on which social circle you apply yourself to, and whether or not the things you like are things that are accepted by your peers. Growing up as a fat kid, and dealing with social awkwardness at a young age as a result, and then moving schools once every two years; I was an unpopular kid. How did I change it? I joined the football team. I learned how to interact socially, I had people who could relate to me (people that became acquaintances from the team), and who didn't think twice if I sat with them at the table.

Fast forward to my college years: I just moved to a new city and transferred colleges. I didn't know a single person by name. So, I applied myself to any group or clubs I could find. I joined the Student Gov. Association, ran for office, won, and made two direct friends that I ended up becoming great buddies with for the two years I lived there, and then several other students and teachers that I became social acquaintances with (meaning they wouldn't think twice if I walked up and started talking to them about something not completely school-related)

You've got it backwards. You're attacking an innocent man at the bidding of the actual bully.

Liberals are the bullies. They are the ones that use the power of the government to FORCE other people to behave as they want them to.

Do you really not see that?

I just don't see it. It is the republicans in my family who cheats on their taxes, they don't report their cash earnings – because as a small business owner they pay way more than the rest of us. Well not actually – if they paid taxes on all revenue they would pay 24% (state and federal combined) working in corporate america I pay 23.6%.

They feel as small business owners that they can't afford healthcare and have never set money aside for a health emergency. Then when they get sick will walk away from a $100K cancer treatment, and expect the Doctor in the family to treat them for free, give their children free shots. I pony up the $430 a month for health insurance, I've never walked away from a hospital bill. I have 2 children with Epilepsy and one of them is profoundly Autistic. So in addition to the $430 a month I also cover all my other obligations – co-pay, any out of network charges when we need to see a specialist. My son is 10, doesn't speak and is not toilet trained – that's another $200 a month just to cover his behind...

For me as a liberal I want you to carry your weight in our society, do the right thing – pay all of your taxes and cover your own healthcare when you life is going well. However, I along with your neighbors will be there to help you when it's not. Life can throw you a curve ball that you never see coming and there needs to be safety nets. Believe me, I never planned on having a special needs child. You never plan on a job loss, or being in an auto accident that leaves your body broken. Republicans cry about liberals being freeloaders – please you are some of the biggest there are going! Do a little research on what states receive the most governmental assistance – southern Red states. So who's really the bully? You can't have it both ways.

A similar thing happened to a guy in my suburban high school in '86. The "popular" kids nominated the only openly gay kid in school and he won. Turns out he had more friends (and more loyal friends) than the jocks. He deserved some recognition anyway, after having been used as a punching bag for 4 years.

Funny that my husband and I were talking about something similar just last weekend. My husband graduated from high school in 1972. Some members of his senior class thought it would be funny to launch a write-in campaign to elect the "homely geek" girl as Homecoming Queen. All of the mean girls voted for her and she actually won. She declined the "honor", of course, and one of the cheerleaders won instead. Forty years later, my husband still feels compassion for the girl who was picked on in such and awful way. He even still remembers her name. The cheerleader who won instead?? Her name, he can't recall.

We had this group that pretty much reigned my entire 3 years of high school. I remember when I came back from bootcamp I ran into THE most popular guy. (He used to try to flirt with me and I'd give him the flip of the hair, a smile followed by a flip of my finger and a drop dean scowl)... So, yep – his g/f – the most popular girl got pregnant, said it was his, he got disowned and is working as fast food – and later found, and when pressed for support did a paternity test and uh nope... not his. After she had 3 other guys fail the same test – she quietly left town.

Jocks, cheerleaders, basic snits & snots – and my sisters used to keep me updated on how miserably they all failed after school. The one intriguing thing is – real life is not like high school. Popularity in real life > has no monetary value.

Learn a trade, keep your grades up, understand this too shall pass.

If your children are being bullied why dont you do what the mother did to the boy that was bullying her son, she got hold of him and beat the sh-t out of him.

Its time more parents did the same.

Are you insane. An adult being arrested for beating the s- out of the bullier is not a solution.

      • JV

Ok Then Karen what would you do if your child was being bullied? The schools pretend to care but they really don't as they are just covering themselves from law suits. I'm not saying that an eye for an eye justice is right or wrong but bullying is so out of control that sometimes it takes an extreme step to regain that control. Most of the time if you bully a bully they will back down since deep down they are the cowards and are scared to death...

        No Karen,

Lets wait until the bully puts the kid the ER, or cripples him, or maybe even kills the kid, then we can feel "sorry" for his bad upbringing. You make me puke.

This is NOT an isolated incident!! I had to take my son out of that school because he was bullied to the point where he ended up with a concussion. As far as the school "investigating the incident", thats the same garbage they spun to me when I demended something be one months before my son's concussion. NONE of the students were repremanded for anything that happened to my son because "they said they didnt do it". This school needs to be loked at a little more closely. This is a long standing problem in this district. Neither Whitney or my son (who happens to be friends with Whitney) are the only students who have been subjected to this extreme form of bullying. This is a VERY common occurance here!

    September 26, 2012 at 3:37 pm |

Sorry to hear about your son and Whitney being bullied. It's unfortunate that this stuff happens everywhere and 99% of the time we don't hear anything about it. Those bullied just live in silence.

Lisa, hate that you had to change schools because of this. Have you tried to take this to a higher level within the administration. Ages ago (I graduated in '82) the principle of our school was a bully and he set the tone from the top. It wasn't until a student was hurt and the father put this man flat out on his a** in front of a full hallway of students and police came and took all our statements was anything done. The principle called the police thinking that none of the students would cross him... The district was forced to get involved at that point and he was fired along with the football coach who had *hit lists* that he gave to his players...

Oh, I wish!! Nope, we have gone all the way to the school board only to be told "we will look into the matter". Upon a follow-up we get told that the principal didnt really thing that it was anything to be concerned about and she spoke with the accused students who told her that nothing happened. Lol! I have the ER report. My son certainly didnt do it to himself. As a little icing on the cake, the school couldnt even be bothered to call me to tell me my son had been hurt. At the time I lived less than a block from the school and everyone at that school knows me well enough to know that I'm a stay at home mom. When I picked up my son, later that day for a doctors appointment, he looked like he had a black egg standing out from the side of his forehead. When I asked why I wasnt called, I was told "oh, well I thought someon called you" . Sorry about the rant. This happened five years ago and I am sitll SO angry about the way that school treats it's students.

Lisa, maybe now that there's national attention focused on this school they'll not be able to hide. It sounds like there are issues with the general admin there, which is just so sad. Fully understand your rant – somethings just don't fade with time. I hope your son's in a better place and knows how to handled this type of people. Best to you both!
