My View: When the president was my professor

Noni Ellison-SouthallBy Noni Ellison-Southall, Special to CNN

Editor's note: Noni Ellison-Southall serves as senior counsel for Turner Broadcasting System Inc., which operates CNN, and heads Turner’s music division. She is on the boards of the Urban League of Greater Atlanta, MARTA, the Atlanta Speech School and the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications. She is a graduate of Howard University and University of Chicago Law School.

(CNN) - I was in a dead sleep the night of February 13 when I got an unexpected phone call. President Barack Obama would be visiting a preschool in nearby Decatur, Georgia, just days after he’d announced a priority on early childhood education. I was invited to hear him speak.

It would be special to hear the president addressing the importance of education, but especially for me. He was my law school professor. I wondered if he, now the president of the United States, was aware that he’d had a profound impact on my life years earlier at the University of Chicago Law School?

I didn’t have long to reflect. My mind was racing as reality set in. With only 12 hours till showtime, what would I wear? What should I say? Would he remember me from class? I needed to get my camera, and of course, my syllabus from “Current Issues in Racism and Law,” the class he’d taught.

It was stored safely in a green binder in an old leather briefcase in the basement with my law books. He’d apologized in the notes for messy copies, a consequence of not having a teacher’s assistant. “On the other hand,” he’d written in the syllabus, “my wife tells me that she wouldn’t have minded getting the professor’s notations on her reading material when she was in law school.” I wasn’t sure if he would sign it, but I planned to ask.

At a recreation center in Decatur, I sat in the row with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Sylvia Reed, his mother. It’s a modest and very intimate space. There was festive music playing, press and security everywhere and a colorful banner that read “Preschool for All” hanging on the wall. Teachers walked around, giggling and taking pictures in front of the podium with the presidential seal affixed. A sense of excitement and anticipation filled the venue. It was surreal. Was I really going to meet the president of the United States today, all those years after I’d met him the first time?

When he entered the room, stood behind the podium and began his speech, I was on my feet with pride and excitement. I was pleasantly surprised that the president seemed to have the same mannerisms and demeanor he’d had as a law school professor 18 years ago. As he spoke about the importance of education at the earliest possible age, I thought about Mrs. Mary Washington from Prairie Elementary School in Lafayette, Louisiana, a teacher who spent many hours outside of class to ensure I could read at grade level, and who encouraged my mom to get me a tutor, and Ms. Verna Ruffin, the Edgar Martin school band director who took a special interest in me and a teacher whom I’ve kept in touch with over the years.

I remember, too, the impact of Obama’s class during my tenure at the University of Chicago.

I enrolled in “Current Issues in Racism and the Law” because I wanted to further my understanding of the themes that dominated the race debate in the United States and the laws that emerged from it. In a school where discussions about race and law didn’t always feel welcome, Obama’s class provided a safe haven to analyze and discuss the complexity and diversity of opinions around racial gerrymandering, race and the criminal justice system and affirmative action. It was hard work; I remember leaving his class intellectually and emotionally drained. Regardless of what I said in his classroom, Obama never appeared to judge me, or other students. Instead, he challenged me to consider every perspective, a challenge that made me into a better law student, and makes me a better lawyer now.

I’d once imagined myself as a civil rights lawyer, but I came to realize that I could perhaps have a bigger impact by going into corporate law. I was sometimes the first and only woman or African-American in my group, and still feel it’s my responsibility to open the door and help others through it. As a direct result of what I learned in Obama’s classroom, I continue to be passionate about the issues we discussed, to make time to participate in my community and to challenge myself to consider every perspective.

For this gift, I had to say “thank you” to the president. I am proof that he did his part, long before he was president of the United States, to equip students with the critical-thinking skills and education necessary to guide our democracy and write that next great chapter in the American story.

After the president concluded his remarks, he walked over and I shared my story. He said he remembered me. He wanted to know what I was doing now. We laughed, something I don’t remember doing between the heavy topics we discussed in class.

And he did autograph my syllabus with his name and these words: “Proud of you!”

The opinions expressed are solely those of Noni Ellison-Southall.

Yes Noni we know, your black and he is half black so he was the most inspirational person in the world.. Come on, he was rated as average when it came to "senior lecturers".

Really? Faculty ratings are kept confidential since they are considered human resource records, and are not subject to public scrutiny. Nice try, though.

And yet, he was repeatedly asked to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined.

See: http://www.law.uchicago.edu/media and maybe you'll stop spouting your unfounded lies about his ratings.

'So by saying that CNN had never posted that information when they had is not a lie'

so claiming something never happened when it obviously did is not lying? amazing.

and the only fact you are partly right is that Obama allowed his law license to go inactive.

Every single man, woman and child in this country owes approximately $57,000 dollars just from the debt OBAMA ADDED.

Well per actual tax paying citizen, over $150,000.00. Only 50k per person if you include children, disabled, and others that dont pay any taxes at all.

Am I surprised to see all the immature racist posts from the Republicans here? Sadly, not one iota. I'm just curious, are there any Republicans here today that aren't jerks? Frankly, I'm surprised there aren't more. I guess the rest are busy buying guns and 15-bullet clips. Don't worry, guys, the NRA has your backs. Fwiw: I predict an alarming increase in the number of accidental shootings in people's homes. It's inevitable, and I pray (hopelessly) that none of the "victims" are innocent children. If you don't know how I know this, just consider me psychic. Btw: if you're a recent gun-buyer, who bought a gun to feel "more safe," you really should have paid more attention in statistics class. Are you going to store the gun loaded? Where will you hide it? How will you get it when you need it? How will you make sure nobody else (child, angry spouse, burglar) won't find it? Yeah, having guns in the home is brilliant. Oh, and more guns + more bullets = more safety. Sure it does. Watch the headlines over the coming months. It won't be pretty. Hopefully, just a bunch of idiots' with a few less toes...I'll start praying now.

If Barry were the person and President that CNN makes him out to be, CNN wouldn't need to be in constant spin mode for thie guy, his qualities would be self-evident. As it stands, the more CNN spins, the more evident it is that they guy is a miserable failure.

Obama the only president to have trillion dollar deficits 4 years in a row. Sheeple called Bush evil for adding 4+ trillion dollars to the debt in 8 years but give Obama a free pass for adding 7+ trillion in 4 years. Talk about sheeple.

This is such silly argument. First, the president does not have that kind of discretionary spending. Second, Obama came into office in a financial crisis when it was necessary to stimulate the economy You might disagree with stimulus spending, but that's because you are uneducated about economics. If the Republicans were in power, they would have pushed for a stimulus (which they did do in Bush's last few months) and it would be Democrats whining about out-of-control government spending.

If it was a Republican or a Democrat people opinions really do not matter ...Both sides lie to everyone white, black, brown, and yellow...So people wake up and make the most of your life , as for me I have done well under Bush and Obama lol I enjoy life and stay educated ,but never worry about things I cannot change lol

That's like saying we shouldn't pick a favorite NFL team. How can we follow the sport of politics if we don't have a favorite team to cheer for? BTW, all the players on my favorite NFL team deserved to make the Pro Bowl, they only lost because their opponents cheated, etc. :)

  10. B

Nah theres nothing you can say to change this persons mind... he is in love with obamas blackness or should i say HALF-blackness. He was talking about overcoming 400 years of slavery. White people are the ones that overcame it for you. If we didnt free you then you would still be slaves. How about some appreciation for my ancestors that fought and DIED for YOUR freedom? I have never once heard a black person show ANY appreciation for the 500,000+ white men that died for them in the most bloody war in US history. You think you are the only people that have been slaves? EVERYONE in history has been slaves at some point. I dont feel sorry for your ancestors I can care less I never owned slaves.

You want respect for your ancesters and yet you can't give respect to the ancesters of Blacks? I'm certain that if you cared a little more for the human race and less about your race, you would evolve into a better human being!!! God Bless You!!!!

I checked, and the University of Chicago Law School made this statement in 2008 when asked what King Obama did there:

"He taught at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years—as a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996, and as a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004."

So folks, the law school itself said he was a lecturer (not a professor). Nice fairy tale though.

    February 25, 2013 at 1:47 pm |
    • nilla

Not sure how this fact changes anything, though. Change "professor" to "lecturer who taught a college class I was in" and isn't the article still the same?

      February 25, 2013 at 1:50 pm |
    • David Stone

@ nilla.....as I said, he was NOT a professor, so the whole premise is flawed, if not completely false and dishonest. But then most things Obama says could be described as such.

Clinton balanced the budget, lowered the debt, no wars and the economy was purring along like a kitten.

Bush inherited the stellar economy and a balanced budget and right off the bat lowered everybody's taxes thinking that would make people happy and get him reelected and no way would lowering everybody's taxes have any kind of impact on us paying our bills. He was wrong. Then the two wars, one fabricated off of lies costing hundreds of thousands of lives and trillions of dollars that went onto Obama's tab. Then Bush doubled the debt and destroyed the economy leaving Obama with the second worst recession in American history and two wars to start his first day in office. Obama hasn't fixed everything, but considering the mess he was left with and the Republican Party treating him as the enemy trying to sabotage any and everything he does I give Obama two thumbs up. As a matter of fact the more the GOP hates him the more I like him. They hate him so much that Obama has become my favorite President of all time which will really make Republicans mad. They really really hate it when people say anything nice about the President.

      February 25, 2013 at 1:39 pm |
      • Clinton > Obama

Clinton balanced the budget on the back of a technology bubble that burst shortly after Bush took office. That and September 11 are more responsible for the recession and the debt than lowering taxes. If anything, the tax cuts jumpstarted the economy. Granted the Iraq war didn't help, but Members of Congress from both parties voted in favor of that and of Afghanistan.

Obama doesn't have the same excuse. He inherited a bad economy but his spending didn't do anything to fix it. He continues to spend at unprecedented levels and the economy continues to sputter along. Now we're facing the sequester, which was his idea, and he's trying to blame Republicans for it.

At the end of the day, I'd say that neither Bush or Obama have done this country many favors. Clinton was better, but not quite the demigod the left sees him as. And both parties in Congress are useless.

Ok blame bush,, doesn't that get old? Who are you going to blame this year. The last president. Oh Ya, it was obama. This is obama's legacy. Largest ever deficits 5 years in a row. Most debt fastest of any president EVER. More people on welfare EVER. More blame on EVERYONE else than any other president EVER. Obama is a smuch. Totally unqualified to flip burgers much less be POTUS>

The economy was "purring along like a kitten?" Are you enough to remember how on almost a daily basis during the Clinton years, news stories would come out about thousands of layoffs? Or how by the late 90s, there were already strong signs that the .dot-com bubble was close to collapsing, which it did in 2000? Things were not as rosy as you seem to think they were.

        February 25, 2013 at 3:43 pm |
    • Check Facts

If you check historically, wars help the economy. Sometimes almost a necessity. WWI let to the roaring twenties, WWII took us out of the Great Depression and made us into the #1 economic country in the world, korean war, still increased US GDP.

President Barack Obama, former editor of the Harvard Law Review, is no longer a “lawyer”. He surrendered his license back in 2008 in order to escape charges he lied on his bar application. A “Voluntary Surrender” is not something where you decide “Gee, a license is not really something I need anymore, is it?” and forget to renew your license. No, a “Voluntary Surrender” is something you do when you’ve been accused of something, and you ‘voluntarily surrender” your license five seconds before the state suspends you.

Bob is reading chain emails from his octogenarian grandfather. Here are the facts from fact check dot org:

Q: Did Barack and Michelle Obama “surrender” their law licenses to avoid ethics charges?

A: No. A court official confirms that no public disciplinary proceeding has ever been brought against either of them, contrary to a false Internet rumor. By voluntarily inactivating their licenses, they avoid a requirement to take continuing education classes and pay hundreds of dollars in annual fees. Both could practice law again if they chose to do so.

      • kuewa

The story about the Obamas surrendering their law licenses due to ethics concerns has been debunked multiple times. It's best not to repeat falsehoods. The Obamas voluntarily surrendered their licenses probably to avoid ongoing licensure requirements such as continuing education, which would be difficult to maintain as President and First Lady. The Illlinois Bar has confirmed that there were no ethics investigations and that the Obamas could have their licenses re-instated.

        February 25, 2013 at 1:44 pm |
      • John

I am not a fan of Obama, but a quick google search will debunk your false ideology. There was nothing wrong with Obama's law credentials and there were no records of disciplinary actions. I read some of your posts and you are a prime example of the sheer laziness that plagues our country. Please do a quick fact check on yourself before posting.

        February 25, 2013 at 1:45 pm |
      • bob

The Illinois bar association does NOT release disciplinary actions past present or future on any of the licensed lawyers in Illinois. For fact check to state that there is no record of disciplinary action is true but not factual. Obama was under investigation for lying on his bar application and chose to withdraw from practicing law rather than face a hearing. FACT JACK.

I started reading this and as I got further and further into it I was thinking "An article that says something nice about Obama?" Conservatives get really really mad anytime anybody says something positive about Obama, so I knew there would be a lot of Conservatives here spreading good will and cheer. Nobody is allowed to say anything good about the President ever. If they do they must be part of the Communist liberal media trying to destroy America.

    Pfft.

'UC Law School statement: The Law School has received many media requests about Barack Obama, especially about his status as "Senior Lecturer." From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The t itle of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the t itle of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School's Senior Lecturers have
high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined.'

We got the Republican memo already. Obama has never had a job, he never went to school, he was born in Kenya, he is a Muslim, he hates America, he belongs to the Chicago Mafia, his wife is an ape, he is a Communist, he hates all businesses, is always on vacation spending 2 trillion a day playing golf on the beach with four aircraft carriers providing escort.

        February 25, 2013 at 1:18 pm |
      • Why so serious?

Seriously?? Not qualified to be a professor after leading the Harvard Law Review? Not qualified to teach a Law course with a focus on Racism? Surely, at least one of the other "Professors" who lectured during the same period would've spoken up by now if this was the case? I definitey didn't attend Harvard or any Ivy League University, but I'm going to go on the limb in saying that there curriculum is probably more rigorous than 95+ % of all universities with Law disciplines. Maybe I'm wrong?

  31. U Chicago Law School Grad

I, too had Obama as an instructor when he was an adjunct profesor at Chicago Law. This woman's experieince is not representative of how most of his students, including me, viewed him. He wasn't inspiring, nor was he even knowledgeable about his subject matter. Reviews by his students generally described him as satisfactory at best. The law school did not considered for a permanent position on the faculty. While these facts about his performance have generally been overlooked by the mainstream media, one can find articles to support what I've said by doing a Google search.

It's sad that CNN didn't put as much effort into looking into Obama's background as it clearly must have had to put inot finding one of the few students who actually saw Mr. Obama as better than mediocre. My guess is that this exercise was the journalistic equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack.

The election is over, CNN, and your guy won. Since he can't run again, I can't understand the continuing need to serve as the PR agency for Obama and his wife, especially given the many important stories out there that should be covered.

If you had him as an adjunct professor (Lecturer) that would have been during his first four years there. He became a Senior Lecturer after four years, according to the UC Law School web site, and they claim that he was offered tenure track on a few occassions but declined.

So maybe the guy became a better professor as his teaching experience grew, which would not be unusual.

Bush drove the country into the ditch, there is no disputing that. And since then the Republicans have done everything in their power, even resorting to a virtual comedy of lies (death panels, anyone?) and voting against their own bills, to keep President Obama from fixing the economy. They have spent the last 5 years actively sabotaging our economy in the hopes of defeating Obama. In fact, they continue to do so now with the Sequestration (which, although Republicans are trying to label it "Obama's Sequestration", was passed 100% by Republican votes - zero Democrats voted for it). Despite their best efforts, the Republicans have failed because Obama consistently outsmarts them and the vast majority of the country isn't buying what the Republicans are trying to sell. The country is moving forward and the economy continues to grow; meanwhile the Republicans have become a party of childish, petulant whiners whose only appeal is to low information voters, Fox News bots, and racists. Just think where our economy could be right now without the epic-yet-failed right wing obstructionism.

The fact that we are no longer having thousands of soldiers dying in the middle east is amazing.

You call this fixed. More people don't have jobs today than ever in the history of the country including the great depression. Stop repeating mantra and actually go look up some facts. Bush may not have been the swiftest boat in the water but obama absolutely sucks and stinks.

How old are you Liseli? When talking about a political subject, be specific, stick to the facts, not emotions. Don’t assume is the way you may think it is, find the facts and make sure you are right on your assertions. That way you will win the argument, but most important you will look intelligent and not like a clueless teenager.

I guess that's why his cabinet is mostly "white".

My observation is that since the liberals think he's too conservative, and the conservatives think he's too liberal... it would appear he's governing in the middle.

And to those who said he would be soft on security, he's killed (have killed) many more of our key enemies than any president to date.

There will always be a difference between campaigning and governing, between a 1st term and a 2nd term.

I think the US is fortunate to have a leader with high IQ, an eagerness to learn from mistakes and a much tougher negotiator than most gave him credit for.

Time to stop and think critically instead of ranting from one extreme to another... although intellectually much easier (and lazier) to think black or white.

Remind me again, under Obama's leadership, did like over 3000 Americans die in a single day? Ask yourself this, if what happened under bush jr happened under Obama, would Obama have been elected? The man made the decision to get bin Laden and you Republican'ts won't ever give him credit for it. Under Bush, if you went against him, you were called "unpatriotic". So I say it is unpatriotic to and just insane to say Obama is evil or is the worst President. Remember what you say as it will be used against you later down the line. If it was another civil war, the south/republicans/white's will lose.....AGAIN!!!!!!!

      February 25, 2013 at 12:53 pm |
      • B

Yea... since in the civil war it was the blacks of the north against the whites in the south... hahaaha. Maybe you should remember that blacks owe their freedoms and everything they have in this country to the EVIL white man...haha

        February 25, 2013 at 1:11 pm |
      • sal87

A history book would serve you well. The south, was Democratic...the Union, was Republican. The President in office at the time, a guy by the name of Lincoln, was Republican. After the election of Abraham Lincoln, Southern Democrats led the charge to secede from the Union and form the Confederate States of America. Further context, the KKK was led by Democratic leaders.

Oh, I do give Obama credit for giving the order on Bin Laden...it's more than Clinton did when he had the same opportunity.

The day people stop claiming the reason someone says something or thinks something is due to racism, is when racism will actually die. Race is not a factor in why I think things – when certain things are done or said it feeds into stereotypes... and all people know stereotypes for all ethnicity have some truth to them (I guarantee someone will find that comment racist somehow). Barrack Obama has been a failed President by every measuring stick – compare him to past Presidents with similar/worse/dare I say, slightly better numbers and do an honest assessment of how they were evaluated compared to Obama...

I agree with your point – I was simply expressing how people, in reality do think – you see/hear something and it can only feed into or stand out to you...due to what YOU personally think of people/groups. It is how people conform opinions about others, you judge them based on a certain criteria that is important to you. It is exactly why Romney had the mantra of "Evil, rich, white guy" in the past election... but is that considered racist? That is my point.

One of the worst ran school systems in the state of Georgia that has now gotten to the point where the Governor has had to step in to possibly kick out all of the school board members! Are you really bringing his race into this?? That has nothing to do with school districts. He is handling the issues in schools the best he can. He is the President of the United States and not only does he have a war to worry about but the budget, gun laws, unemployment, etc. Let's see you have all that on one plate and handle it to the point that everyone is getting exactly what they want. Not too easy huh? The people that sit on the schoolboards committee are brought in either by votes from the school district or brought up internally. So if you have a problem with your school district, don't get on the President but go to your public hearings and find out why your school district is doing so bad. Don't throw your issues onto someone that is trying to run our country... and don't use race in your arguments, it makes you look racist and like an idiot. Obama isn't my favorite President but you can't deny that it is the hardest, most stressful and exhausting job in the entire country so give the guy some credit for taking on the job and doing his best. He was a lot better of a candidate then any other person running for President.

Obama besides being an excellent president I think he has done a great deal to help racial relationships in the US and the views from countries outside of the US. Just the fact that we would elect twice a black president says something at least about the views of the majority of US citizens.

I'm not going to throw in one of those conspiracy theories that I've been seeing, but here's a question to think about.

Am I the only person who finds it a little bit creepy (obsessive stalker type creepy) that this woman would hold onto a syllabus for 18 years. I'm not talking about school books or notes or anything that might be useful as a reference material, because I know I saved some things from my college years. I'm talking about the syllabus... that 2 page introduction every student gets at the beginning of the semester that outlines grading policies and what to expect in class. That's like one of the first things that gets thrown out at the end of the semester, and to hold onto it for 18 years... that's raising the cuckoo flag in my opinion.

Not necessarily creepy- I bet I still have all the syllabi from my college courses from 12+ years ago simply because I save way too much and haven't bothered going through all the boxes of old paperwork that are stacked up- It's not because I'm a stalker, just disorganized! I probably still have stuff from high school and before haha... and I'll probably be on an episode of Hoarders pretty soon because of it!

Keeping a syllabus from college isn't strange at all. I received my undergraduate degree more than 20 years ago, and I still have the class notes, handouts, and materials for undergraduate courses in my major. I didn't keep materials from most of my elective courses, but from my major I kept as much as possible – and I still reference some of it today. I still have everything from graduate school as well. Materials from both college experiences, and many of my graduate and undergraduate courses, has been useful in my profession.

no president is responsible for the state of this country. you are no patriot and your certainly not funny. obama was a conlaw professor at uchicago (T1 school), after being editor of the harvard law review (best school in nation) and he didn't come from wealth. hes one of the best candidates for president we've ever had. not because of my opinion because of his creditentials and experience as a senator, you could say he's "qualified" for the position. you my friend are part of the nut-crew of people who think that obama has the authority or power to give away things at a whim. you see congress must approve his measures. the american people are represented via congress. the founding fathers set it up this way. he's committed no crimes, and pretty much somehow got the economy atleast a little better than it used to be considering it was in a free fall in the bush era. you are an igonorant fool and part of the reason this country is struggling. you spend more time trying to tear down the sucesses of your betters, rather than working to catch up. if every american worked as hard as obama for what he has, this country would be #1 in every category. obama is a shining example of hard work paying off. we have the talent. we just have dumb fools like you, who are too lazy, and unwilling to try to put in the effort. i went to law school and business school and my father came to this country with 8$ in his pocket. i worked my way like many hard americans. america is a wonderful country, and you my friend are no patriot. you're a biggot and if obama's name or skin color wasnt what it was im sure you'd be his biggest fan. ur an embarrassment to yourself and you give a bad name to good american people. the same good people who helped me get my way, and it wasnt you. don't kid yourself. it was the teachers and the lovers of other human beings that helped and showed me the path. may you find peace in your life, and if not atleast stop trying to hold the rest of the world down for your inadequacies. if you dont have what you want, stop trying to blame obama and look in the mirror and ask yourself why. this country has everything to give you, u just didn't work for it and thats the truth and the truth hurts.

Thank God we have an educator in the White House. He has the intelligence to elevate himself above the fray of GOP petty racism and obstructionist behavior. It's so very disappointing that so many of the GOP have sunk to a new low from all the propaganda and hate. If we can improve education, perhaps we will have more critical thinkers in this country.

Race relations, a mess. Our budget, ugh. Please, do not not try to tell anyone this man has been good for America.

So Sue, you believe that an american citizen who denounces his country moves to Yemen to live among America's declared enemy and spread extremist propaganda and plot terrorist attacks against the US and it's Interests should not be targeted for assassination because he is a US Citizen? I feel if a person so publicly and vehemently declares themselves an enemy of any country and aids in or plots the deaths of innocent people, has forfeited any rights of citizenship.

        @Greg

See my original response below – no politician should be sole judge, jury, and executioner...especially not of anyone who hasn't charged, tried, or convicted of a crime. Those who commit treason, or any other crime on the books should be apprehended, and tried in front of a jury of their peers. Any less by Obama,Bush, whoever shouldn't be tolerated.

Still don't agree? Well, we gave Timothy McVeigh a trial. A speedy, fair, innocent-until-proven-guilty trial in front of his peers. These people deserve the same. Anything less is truly unamerican.

Nice article, but you fail to mention the part where he had a lecture about the "importance of rendition", "extrajudicial killing of US citizens", and of course "holding people in limbo for 10 years without charge, or trial (gitmo)."

I don't pretend to know everything that he does, as to what goes on in this country...BUT, I wouldn't be very proud to know he was my professor if I knew people were suffering because of policies he continues.

No one forfeits their citizenship under the law by such a manner. We have due process in this country to ensure that all are innocent, until proven guilty. If a US citizen someone is guilty of treason, espionage, etc. they should be apprehended, charged, and tried in a court of law, in front of a jury of their peers.

No politician should be made sole judge, jury, and executioner. That's why the rule of law should be upheld, and not subject to some kind of popularity contest. If we gave Timothy McVeigh a fair, and speedy trial, then this person should get one too. PERIOD.

So, in the 5th year of his Presidency, we now have someone giving a firsthand account of something Obama did when he was in school, or lecturing? This is the first, first person account of anything regarding Obamas educational experience. This administration has gone to extraordinary lengths to cover up and keep secret any information about Obamas college education, grades, or jobs related to University lecturing or Professorship, and we're supposed to read this and get a warm and fuzzy feeling? Sorry, this is a set up if I ever saw one. This story was planted by the White House. Wake up people.

I read CNN, ABC news, Fox News, and MSNBC daily, and have for years. I also watch these things on TV. If you had done any of these in the last 4 years, you would see this also. Sadly, you only watch CNN, and believe every thing they say. Broaden your horizons, do some investigation, and think for yourself. I dislike most politicians, and am not a big fan of either party. But I really get tire of the politicians and the press trying to manipulate the american public. I get even more tired when they succeed on people that take what they say at face value, and don't investigate for themselves.

Nice reply. Now, I challene you to find any verifiable information about any of Obamas grades, transcripts, dates attended, or accomplishments from ANY college or University that he attended. Also, find out who paid for his education, or if it was scholarships and student loans, how much wa it, and how did he pay it off? The cost of what he claims he did, and where he went runs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. His family did not have that kind of money. These are questions the American public has a right to know.

You want paranoid? Do you know that Joe Biden ruptured an aneurysm in his brain, had two complex brain surgeries, and was in rehab for months back in 1988? Don't believe me? This is publicly available information. Just Google it. Now, find me any report from a doctor, any report of his postoperative MRI scan, anything relating to what the injury to his frontal lobes may have done to his insight, judgment or personality–nothing. And find me any example of this EVER being discussed during the campaign. I wish Biden all the best, but I think it is terrifying that the man one heartbeat from the oval office has this history and that it has never been publicly discussed. How could that NOT be due to wilful media suppression of the topic?

Good thing I am none of the above, so I have no criticism to dish out to anyone. Only one thing that we should all ponder upon, – man, woman, boy or girl, if you were faced with being elected President of this great nation, are you certain you will be able to do a better job? Politics is exactly what it is, politics. Just pray for the current cabinet and hope and pray that things somehow change for the better for all of us.

Yes, majority of people on welfare are white bc whites make up 65-67% of the total US population while blacks make up only 13% of the population. However, a large percentage of the black population is on welfare and commits majority of violent crimes in this country. For only being 13% of the poplation, 50% of the murders in this country are by someone who is black. A large percetange (not all) of blacks need to straighten their act up, quit being dependent children in a adult bodies and raise their children better. This may seem like harsh words but it is a concern which many people in this country (blacks included) are TIRED of blacks acting like damn fools!

Thank you for one of the only stories I've ever read about President Obama as an educator. I'm also glad to read that your teacher cared enough to help you and convince your mother to get you help when you needed it, which is rare. Most children are just left to flounder because it's embarrassing to be viewed as "needing help," although most of us have weak spots. I feel better about him, since I've always viewed him as rigid, secretive, and paternalistic. Maybe he can be convinced to move to the center on issues and not seem so combative.

One is a professor when one hired to do that job, tenured or not. I had a lot of visiting professors in Grad School that weren't tenured. Does that mean they weren't actually performing their jobs?

Your statement presumes that when you get hired for a new job, you don't actually hold that job until management tells you they don't plan on firing you. That is the core of your specious argument, correct? So, tell me–what are you doing while waiting for that confirmation? Working, hopefully!

It's sad when so much mythology is passed on as fact to the lowest common denominators to parrot.

I am an over 70 white man from the South, and I was very glad when President Obama was elected. I am even more happy now that he has been re-elected. Do I think he is a perfect person that never makes a mistake? Absolutely not! I simply believe him to be the best person for the job. Most of all, I appreciate the compassion he demonstrates toward others.

There is no risk in being critical of those who have the courage and desire to lead. If you are have nothing constructive to offer then step aside and let those who do move forward. I didn't like Bush nor did I vote for him but the moment he took office he was my leader good bad or indifferent and I supported him while not in agreement. The is citizenship. We have to be one against the real enemies on this planet. I do not believe Bush is an evil man just painfully human and il-equipped to lead effectively as was proven by his track record and aftermath of tenure. We are all painfully human and the moment we get our head around this reality only then can we began to grow as nation. We need to act in our everyday lives as National Family, let's fix our collective household as it is clearly out of control when I see the continued hatred and non-sense.

Some people are still bitter Obama won the election, still bitter and clinging to their guns, pun intended. It's sad. They need to read his book "Dreams from my father", amazingly well-written book long before he became even a candidate for any office. I believe he was a community organizer then, the job these bitter people such as the former half-governer and witless Palin loved to belittle during the campaign. The president won the election even though the Repulicans, teaparty types, and other conservtives worked hard for four years vowing openly to make him a one-term president. They fought him each and every step, bitter, clinging to one issue: make him a one term president. They didn't care if the country's economy suffered. They can always blame him; he is the president, right? What a tragic, sad, people! Well the president is popular again because the majority of Americans, white, black, hispanic or native American, voted for him, and voted against the sad, bitter, minority. End of story. But as the African proverb goes, 'the dogs will continue to bark, but the camel marches on'! The progressive majority will keep on marching forward.

A common thread connects us all Birth and Death two absolute certainties, it matters not your color, IQ, Wealth, or any material gains one might perceive as positioning themselves as above others, these two important events levels all playing fields, so invest not in trivial matters as what matters is what we do between the dash that is all that matters. If you act as an idiot then one will regard one as such if act as a nobleman then one will hold as such ask yourself does it matter when your day of reckoning is front and center. Love the greatest of all existence. Try it on for size and stop the childlike non-senses and rise. We have to collectively keep on pushing forward. A professor at that University of Illinois where my two daughters attended said in her opening address to all the freshman class, small minds talk about thinks, larger minds talk about people and great minds discuss possibilities, what do you stand.

I voted for Obama in 2008 and Romney in 2012. I think Obama is a great man but I don't agree with how he handles our money. I agree with most of his other positions. I don't understand why he is trying to raise taxes on the rich again – they just did it back in January and now he wants it done again to avoid the automatic cuts? I thought he agreed to make spending cuts if the Republicans raised taxes on the rich in January? We HAVE to cut spending – you can't ever get the debt under control until you cut spending. Obama is not keeping his word – and it doesn't matter what race he is or relegion or anything else – he made promises to the American people when he was running for President to lower the debt and he has made ZERO effort to do that. Our national DEBT is the greatest threat to America – bigger than 50 Irans and North Koreas combined. Obama needs to agree to some cuts without any taz code changes this time...

its simple, when times are tough the rich need to help MORE. who got us into this mess? the people who control money who just happen to be rich. obama understands that, romney didn't and neither do you. jobs aren't created by rich people. they are created by poor people who spend money. they spend it when they have jobs. demand creates jobs... if you can't understand that you are as idi0tic as bush and palin

The President is a great great man and most people who saw him when he was doing his community work at the lowest levels of society would appreciate him for it and maybe grasp how he became president and what he stands for today. Some may not get that, but they have short memories.
We need to identify the 22% who gave George W Bush good marks at the end of his term in office and make sure they never get to vote again and audit their tax returns.

I don't care if the president is green or orange – or black. I just want him OR her to do what is best for the country. Obama has not done anything good for the country. By the time he leaves office, even more people will be on the government's teat because it is a lot easier than trying to start a small business due to all the government interference at both the state as well as the federal levels – and there are simply not enough jobs.

The government has taxed itself into a corner. The vote pandering traitors in Washington continue to dole out dollars we do not have to people who do not contribute to the system, and also send extortion money to foreign countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and many others in the form of "aid". In other words, they are stealing from the taxpayers who rely on taxpayer funded programs that improve the lives of American CITIZENS and have brought us to the edge of all out revolt, a la The Boston Tea Party.

We're on a precarious path, and Obama has widened the trail big time.

I made it through a top 25 law school without att the ending class. I went to the first day of class for the syllabus, and then again for the exam. Did fine without the bloviating self importance of a law professor mucking up my days. When attendance was mandatory, I would leave after attendance to go the "rest room." The Bar review course was all that was necessary. Law school is a joke, and the professors were all "legends in their won minds." It is a matter of useless people tryng to intellectualize their parasitic place in society.
