Black History Month – Background and Resources

By Schools of Thought Editors, CNN

(CNN) In the early 20th century, there were almost no mentions of the contributions of African-Americans in U.S. history textbooks. That is what inspired historian and educator Dr. Carter G. Woodson to start “Negro History Week” in 1926. Woodson choose the month of February for this focus because it was the birth month of two leaders who fought to end slavery: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized the expanded observance as “Black History Month”, calling upon Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the organization started by Woodson in 1915, designates the theme for Black History Month. This year’s theme is “Black Women in American Culture and History”. The theme was chosen, because, as it states on the ASALH website, “To gain an understanding of the history of African American women is to broaden our understanding of a people and the American nation.”

CNN Student News will feature special show segments focusing on Black History throughout the month. The following is a partial list of Black History Web resources for teachers and parents. Click on the title to go to that site.

I say like Freeman; there is no "white history month," and the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."

It's amazing to see how some hateful people highjack the great accomplishments our country has to celebrate. If it's not banning Mexican-American Studies in Tucson it's bashing on Black History Month on the CNN blog. But good, kind hearted Americans know that these types are not the majority. Just remember the Freedom Riders, that's a good showing of the best kind of Americans our country has produced.

"Why don't we have a white history month?' Asks many white people.

To all you ignorant buffoons, here's why.......

Let's see......... we all had to learn about the Ancient Greeks and their mythology. That's white history. We had to learn about the Romans. That's white history. We had to learn about Europe's Dark, Middle( medieval), and Renaissance eras. That's white history. We had to learn about imperial Britain's golden age. That's white history. France's French Revolution. That's white history. May I go on?

Hopefully this sheds some light into your brains as to why Black history month is warranted.

Black History is a joke. It only exists only in America. Not even in Africa. History is History, either it happened or it didn't. Some dopes tried to change the picture of 3the firefighters raising an American Flag at WTC on 9/11. To include a Black man. Why? That's not History, its FICTION.

      February 3, 2012 at 12:14 pm |
    • joquan

So if you are one of the White guys raising the the flag at an historic moment... would you want to be removed and replaced by a fictional black guy, just to be inclusive????? No go pick cotton,

Jersey, and the Irish only get St. PATRICK DAY! GO FIGURE. lol 😉

    February 2, 2012 at 7:53 pm |

That's not true Jesse James. Mexico and Ireland celebrate and honor the San Patricio Battalion, the Irish Catholic deserters who turned sides and fought for Mexico during the American invasion in 1867. They are considered heroes in Mexico and every Mexican kid learns about them in school.

With all the Black ....this and that ... just for themselves, why don't we just have Black schools, water fountains, bathrooms, busses and so on?

I thought we had all that stuff 60 yrs ago and they didn't like it? Can't have it both ways.

Black history month is for everyone. Knowledge eradicates ignorance which is the fuel for hate.
So go ahead and celebrate BHM. I guarrantee that you will be less ignorant when it's over.

I'm Mexican American and I celebrate Black Histor Month. Civil Rights leaders like Patricia Due, the Freedom Riders, MLK, they are my heroes, too. I am a teacher, and I try to teach my students about these great Americans. We need more men and women like them.

Why does it ALWAYS seem to be Black History Month? Can't we put all this racist nonsense behind us and move ahead? It's racists that keep racism alive and I'm sick of hearing about it.

Wow. After reading this board, it is obvious Black History month is still needed. All the racist like to crawl out of their little rocks and post a bunch of racist propaganda under the guise of a fake name. But I'm sure, when you aren't around your little red neck family or friends, you like to claim there is no racism in America, that your not a racist. You probably don't see yourself as racist. I find it ironic. You all are cowards. Angry pathetic cowards. You need to let go of your anger and resentment against minorities. All minorities. Black or what not. Or crawl back under the white hooded sheets. Nobody cares what you think.

    February 2, 2012 at 1:15 pm |
    • Jesse James

Yeah, that will all happen when you let go of Black month and affirmative action and NAACP, BET, and Miss Black USA

    • Jesse James

I don't see a White entertainment television or miss white USA or an association for the advancement of white people. So if you don't want to be special then don't expect to be treated with favoritism.

      February 2, 2012 at 1:23 pm |
    • Fact_checker

Just like how you posted under a fake name? You have a point about racism but it does not excuse that there is not a Native American history month or a Chinese history month, both of which are more deserving considering the history of both. The Native Americans were doing just fine before we came here and the Chinese have enjoyed one of the most advanced civilizations in existence. On the other hand, name one country that is ruled and governed by black people that ISN'T a popular tourist spot for Americans that is prosperous. You'll have to look toward gold and diamond-rich countries to come even close.

Fact Wrecker, november is native american heritage month. Asian/Pacific Island American heritage month is may (promoted from just a week to a full month by Obama).

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle... (if you plan on using it.)

@ Fred... your description of "US" sound a lot similar to the white folks who are constantly committing heinous crimes against children. You know YOU WISH you could have a fine sista such as myself. What you've described sounds like what your ancestor, who may have owned slaves, looked like. Your ancestors were filthy ANIMALS who raped BLACK WOMEN ALL DAY LONG!!! So please spare me your so called description of black people. The filty white trash I see walking around this city are far from beautiful. They have to sit in the tanning saolns for hours to get this beautiful brown sugar skin. Ask your daddy or your grandaddy how sweet these black berries are!!

    • Jesse James

      Just one question......HOW MUCH?

      February 2, 2012 at 1:15 pm |
    • Fact_checker

Over 70% of all slaves were sold to white people by their own tribes so please don't include us as animals. And by the way, when you refer to yourself as a 'sista' you feed to the stereotypical people you despise. The word is sister, which carries no special meaning other than being a female family member.

    February 2, 2012 at 1:09 pm |

Good point. You should see what they say about Mexican Americans. Apparently the "typing tough guys" want us all to go back to Mexico either through deportation or in a body bag. God is shaking his head at them right now.

It is apparent that there are ignorant fools in every ethnic community. I would question whether it is wise to give them any air time at all at least include the rampant signs of ignorance on both sides of the aisle so that your fellow classmates can discuss how best to negate this proliferation of hate and intollerance.

Let's face it – Most people are comfrtable with others that have similar backgrounds, ideas, likes, history etc. Does that make us racist? Of course not. Things that cause racial resentments are the proliferation of special treatments because of race. Balck History Month, Hispanic in America blogs, etc. If a caucasion person wanted to promote "white" history month we would be ridden out on a rail. We are AMERICANS- Black, white , brown, yellow, red. WE share a common history some good some bad. By continuing to promote separatism in the name of atonement for past sins the quest for a colrblind society will never be achieved.

    February 2, 2012 at 12:47 pm |

Happy Koon History Month! Letw take the opportunity to discuss some koon characteristics. They are USUALLY angry, physically strong, animalistic, and prone violence, loud and obnoxious, smell like urine. They are also intellectually childlike, physically unattractive (any good looking black woman you choose to reference is more white than black), and neglectful of their biological families.

Actually you are wrong, but not by much. Breakdown of AFDC in US. White 38.8 percent, Black 39.8 percent, Hispanic 15.7 percent, Asian 2.4 percent, other 3.3 percent. But keep in mind that If you take the percentage of the White race that there is and compare it to the percentage of the White on welfare you will see the numbers are quite low, on the other hand if you take the percentage of black compared to the percentage of blacks on welfare you will see there are more blacks by percentage on welfare than any other race.

Now wait a second. You should consider that there are almost 6 times as many white people in America as there are African Americans. 72.4% White persons versus 12.6% African Americans were counted in 2010. By those numbers, African Americans are at a much larger percentage of Americans on government assistance.

As long as black folks continue to do things to make themselves as separate, they will be. What about black history every month? What about a United College Fund? What about National Advancement Association for the Advancement of Americans? Remember separate bathrooms for separate races? You only replicate that travesty when you want to be "seprate". Inclusion means inclusion. If you want inclusion, you cannot also have separation.

Black history is dum.The history of Black people is in America, it's self.So you try to cram the history of Black people in 28 days in the month of February! Blacks, built America from their backs, from forced slavery and racism and the rest
IS.....HIS-STORY. The one's who changes history to their liking. Do away with this so called Black history month it's not need or wanted!!! If you want to learn history, look in to how America was formed.....the MURDEROUSLY SHOCKING TRUTH.

It is shocking. Shocking to discover that black and Chinese people were forced to build rail and road projects under brutal conditions. Oh, did I forget to mention white folks were too? Yep, thousands of us. Irish and Slavic ancestors were there too.

Black history month was needed at one time, but now is just unfair to all other races, including the lucky ones that also have their own official "history months." Even among the various history months that we do celebrate, black history month gets FAR more publicity and recognition than all others combined (it sure seems that way at least). What about little Pilipino, Russian, Asian, pacific islander, Arab or indian children? Didn't their peoples contribute to our country? Since we don't have enough months in the year to highlight the contributions of all of the races that make up our nation, we should stop designating any history months and instead just make sure that our history textbooks are inclusive of all significant contributions to our society, regardless of the race of the person making the contribution. It's not even fair to children of our current majority race, because it can make them think that their race is not worthy of being celebrated, even though it is the race of our founders and our textbooks are littered with stories of their accomplishments. It's also unfair to white children for us to focus too much on wrongs committed by past generations of white people without also talking about the negative histories of other races as well. It can make them feel like their race is inherently evil when it definitely is not, but that is another topic altogether.

    • Take the Blinders Off

Essentially teaching that history is to counter what is not being taught in classroom and the negative being perpetrated on the media, or what have you. If you have a problem with Black History Month, as yourself, how much do you really know about it? Then take it up with the educational system.

      February 2, 2012 at 10:28 am |
      • POWMIA

then start teaching it, don't make a special month for celebrating the history of just one race

        February 2, 2012 at 10:47 am |
    • Irvin Carney

There is nothing wrong with people celebrating their history....why do you have a problem when Black people do it? Black people surely have not had a problem learning about other people's history

      February 2, 2012 at 11:01 am |
      • POWMIA

I don't have a problem with people celebrating their history, but its not just black people who are supposed to celebrate black history month is it? Black history month is more or less an official national celebration, which by itself wouldn't be a problem if we (i.e., the entire country) also held specific celebrations for all other races. We don't do that though, so what ends up happening is that a handful of races (black, latino, etc) get their own special celebration for the accomplishments of people from their race. What makes black people, or latinos, or any other race more important than the others? Are black people better than other races? Do they deserve their own celebration more than the other races? The answer is NO, so lets move on and stop all race-based history months. Again, if the primary reason for black history month is because we aren't teaching the achievements of black people in our classrooms, then we need to change the curriculum to make sure we teach it, but we do not need to hold a special celebration for them. They are no better, and no worse, than any other race of people in this country.

        February 2, 2012 at 12:25 pm |
      • Irvin Carney

I completely agree with your statement about the curriculum needing to be changed. But Black History Month will continue to be needed until Black History is accepted as American history by society at large. Black, no , African people's contribution to civilization is continuously minimized or not told in our school system. Worse, the brutality and terrorism that Black people in America have suffered is either downplayed or kept away from the general public. Until Black History is synonymous with American history Black History Month will be needed.

      • Joe Joe Momma

No, I don't know of any good black people. I have met black people that maybe wouldn't blow my head off for $10, maybe would only steal it when I'm not looking, and maybe blacks who would only rape my wife if they were 100% sure they could get away with it and wouldn't do it otherwise. But I know of no better blacks than that. Sorry

      • Oblivious

Unfortunately, you were bred to hate and continue the nonsense thought that you are the cream of the crop. It seems you have a paranoia about your wife and the sad things is that your worst nightmare is that she will be found in bed with a black man that she is actually enjoying as opposed to being raped. As I read the history, the European counterpart were throughing spears and living in huts too. You are your worst enemy. With self destructive thoughts like that it must be pretty difficult to live in a world where you have to come in contact with the Black race because you have lumped them all into one neat package. Face it, this world does not belong to your kind and you're more dangerous than any black man or drug addict because your mind is corrupted and there probably are no repairs for it because it is too deep rooted.

Why should Black people abandon their great heritage? White people don't, so why should Black people? America is a place to celebrate and appreciate differences not a place to force people to forget about them. Knowledge of Self is important especially when America has made a tremendous effort to make Black people feel that their was nothing of their race before Slavery.

I mean I enjoy peanut butter as much as the next guy, but I'd rather go without it & not have to worry about a crack head killing my wife or raping my daughter, etc. Other than that, maybe a great heritage of destruction and violence, rape, murder, unemployment, welfare, etc. And you're assessment is only half right, blacks have no history before & after slavery. Lets trace black history...100,000 years ago.. live in huts, throw spears at animals....50,000 years in huts, throw spears at animals...10,000 years in huts, throw spears at animals...100 years in huts, throw spears at, live in huds(hud housing) leach off american welfare system, throw spears at rival gangs...progress for blacks 1,000 years from now, throw bigger spears at more gangs. I guess if we are willing to call absolutely anything great, you are spot on.

Where's Asian history month? American Indian history month? Indian history month? I think its time we get rid of this. I feel its a leftover from older times where there was basically the white majority, and the black minority and this was created to keep race relations calm. Now that America is truly a melting pot of races we can do away with this.

        How is he misinformed??

        February 2, 2012 at 10:11 am |

Shay is saying that he is misinformed because there are a number of history months – Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) is observed in May, originally set aside by Congress in 1978 to be a week long commemorative event, it was expanded to a month long celebration in 1990; National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15-October 15 and was made into law in 1988.
Just because these communities don't take full advantage of these opportunities to educate people about their history, culture, etc. doesn't mean that they don't exist.

If people have been paying attention, none of these blantantly ignorant comment would have been made at all. You're all right! There shouldn't be a black history month. There should be a Black History year. It should be put into the curriculum each alongside the "European History" that has so heavily been shoved down our throats that we don't even realize that there is another side to this story because we are hearing it from such a jaded point of view. It is this type of ignorance that is allowing our young people to remain blind to the importance of anytime given to any race. When it is presented in the right way to you, maybe you will develop empathy for a concept or time in history that cannot be swept under a rug and forgotten. Just a little food for thought.

Correction... "Concerned." "I'm not concerned about the poor because there's a safety net there." "If it needs fixing, I'll fix it." "IF" it needs fixing! So in other words, there's no need to implement job training and advancement programs to help the poor to improve their lives and help them climb the socio-economic ladder to beome middle class Americans tomorrow! Perhaps that is why the GOP classifies this administration's stimulus bill wasteful spending...Perhaps unemployed and struggling Americans don't need financial stimulus to overcome the current economic crisis the rich Republicans have cause this country. To them there's already a safety net to help struggling and unemployed Americans get back on their feet. Its called an imaginery Republican safety net! Hahahahaha! Obama/Biden2012!

Thank you for not changing the essence of the month by changing it to AFRICAN American month. Our more recent ancestors fought and died for equal rights to be American and it would be nice if we didn't have to be labelled at all. But with the great mix of heritages that America has, everyone wants to be beholden to their homeland-and that's great. I choose to be an American first-this is my homeland- and people can look at me and know I'm Black and talk to me to know I'm not African. And to SHUT UP the ignorant, the prejudice idiots and the modern day cowards- I am as American as you, will get all the same rights as you and you are no better than ANYONE-no matter what you choose to call me or what you think about me. As if you care. And no, Native Americans weren't bought and sold, and whipped, and and enslaved by pilgrilms. Get a clue, fool.

Such hate! In fact, the comments underscore the very need for attention to Black History and an observance of Black History Month. If the responders were versed in the history and struggles of African Americans in the U.S. and indeed throughout the diaspora, they would not have offered such comments. Hence, by their very questioning and ridiculing, they demonstrate that they know not of what they speak and furthermore, are not inclined to remedy the situation.

I think the whole thing is a crook. We have numerous racial/ethnic groups that have contributed to the formation of our nation, more than the number of months in a year. I can not think of any reason why a few should have a month of recognition, and others have none.

Where's the Latino History Month? After all, there are more Latinos in the U.S. than blacks.

What are you talking about? You need to move to LA and take advantage of all the tax subsidized services for us illegals! Every month is Latino month!

Hey jimbo, National Hispanic Heritage Month is the period from September 15 to October 15 in the United States, when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the group's heritage and culture. It is important that the contributions of all Americans are observed. Historically we have eliminated these narratives from our educational system. God Bless
