5th grader's speech topic goes viral

by James Dinan, CNN

(CNN) – Ten-year-old Kameron Slade has become an online sensation, and it’s all due to one speech.

Slade wanted to deliver a speech supporting same-sex marriage for a contest at his Queens, New York, elementary school, but the principal deemed it inappropriate and barred him from making it.

After word of his plight went viral, including YouTube videos of him reading the speech, Slade was eventually allowed to deliver his remarks at a different school assembly. Last week, he appeared before the New York City Council, again delivering his call to accept same-sex marriage.

Kameron Slade spoke to CNN’s Carol Costello about his whirlwind experience. Click on the above video to hear why he wanted to talk about same-sex marriage and more.

This kid is a good kid. Bad kids can become good kids and good adults. I'm a teacher, and a classic rock junkie, (OK an old teacher) so I didn't like Pink Floyd singing "We don't need no education" and "Hey, teacher, leave those kids alone." Finally after several decades and several decades as a teacher, I get the point. WE HAVE NO RIGHT to judge this kid. No religion or political philosophy has any right to judge this kid. It's called CHILDHOOD, AND GROWING. Stuff your own opinion ......somewhere and let the kids move on.

I'm always confused when those who call themselves Christian and profess to follow Jesus Christ, use the Old Testament to prove their arguments. News flash: Jesus said, " In me the Old Law is fulfilled." He further stated (as quoted by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) in so far as it is translated correctly, that the Old Law is done away and we are to love each other as we love ourselves. So you must now choose, do you want the rigid judgement of the Old Testament or the Gospel of Love that Jesus brought to the world? If you call yourself a follower, then follow every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord as you are commanded. Judge not, lest ye be judged with the judgement you use. And by the way, money is not evil but" the LOVE of MONEY is the root of all evil." We see this in our country right now. I would never call myself a Christian because the name has been sullied with bigotry and hatred. I have studied the teachings in the Bible and the line of change is clear. I believe in love of even the unlovable as Jesus taught by eating with the publicans and tax collectors, hated in his day as they are today. I am a Humanist who lives by Buddhist philosophy and honors the teachings of Jesus. How shamed he must be to see all the controversy in this and every such discussion where his name is thrown about and trampled.

What a nice young man, very well spoken, unfortunately the kingdom of heaven does not support the argument...Jesus loves all people, just not everything they do and say, that's why he left the bible so we'd know what he wants, and what he absolutely feels is so very wrong...

Everybody, 1, 2, 3, awwwwwwwwwwwww. Another sappy story being obnoxiously pushed by the media because CNN wants the public to think even children can accept gay marriages. Leave it to CNN to push this agenda through the eyes of children.

It is marriage. Period. Two people who love each other sharing their lives. I do say AWWWWWWWW!

You know, in a time where 90% of the news is purely negative and disheartening, it is nice to see something positive. CNN didn't write the speech for the kid. He would have still written it, read it, and posted it regardless of CNN. Whatever your political or religious view point is, it's nice to see some story where someone isn't getting shot, that's not apart of the presidential debate.

      July 31, 2012 at 11:06 pm |
    • rtbrno65

It sounds like you actually want the story to be censored. The kid made the speech on his own initiative. It went viral, and now you want it to be covered up.

Well what do you expect? Being Pro-Gay is politically correct because of the strong Gay & Lesbian lobby. They have the Money the Media, and to Political Clout. They do believe it was them who got President Obama elected and I can't make any arguments against that because for the most part they could be right.

Just eliminate any and all government sponsored benefits from marrriage and let anyone and everyone contract into marriage. Certainly would make for a more level playing field.

If you listen to what he says, you can tell his mother put him up to this. We should not allow any religious or politic speech inside schools. No exceptions, I don't care what side of the issue you are on.

Excellent point, let's give a speech about the founding fathers and their desire to host a Country based on Jesus Christ, and His teachings...the good news is that no matter if the laws change on earth, they shall never change in heaven...praise God...

It's ridiculous how a 5th grader is even talking about marriage. That just tells you how much influence a parent can have on their child. He should be writting about what his favorite sport is, or game, or his favorite food. Not be worrying about love and commitments. Let's kids be kids and leave them out of our ridiculous arguments. Grow Up!!!

Been reading alot of stories lately in the news. Learned a few new things.
    1. To support Family Values, embrace hate.
    2. To support your local church, make a donation to the KKK.
    3. No one wants to bake you a cake or make you a chicken sandwich.
4.Politicians are liars and Liars are politicians.
    5. Reality is fake, but to be fake is to be real.
    6. If I don't want to see you naked, I can ignore your texts.
    7. I can not enjoy a coke or baby formula in New York.
    8. I will not even mention where I can not curse.
    9. We should close our borders, because we already have enough dumba__es in this country.

Can not wait to see what I learn next week!!

So this child believes that people should be free to marry as they please. I wonder whether he also believes that siblings or first cousins should be free to marry as well, or if bigamy should also be permissable.

    July 31, 2012 at 6:03 pm |
    • Tony

Read your Bible Mo. Many of Christian's prophets had more than one wife. Also, the Lord created Adam then made Eve, They beget Cain and Abel. End of story. Cain killed Abel. That left Adam, Eve, and Cain. Where the hell did the rest of our population come from?!

      July 31, 2012 at 7:15 pm |
      • Derrick

Tony, God created and placed Adam in the Garden of Eden, the rest of the world was already populated, he set Adam in the Garden to teach him to walk after righteousness so he could go out and influence the rest of the world and teach them the ways of our Living God (Genesis 2:15) And a plural mention of man is made in (Genesis 1:28) And God blessed THEM, and God said unto THEM, Be fruitful, and multiply...

Don't the Royal family do it, Middle Eastern people do it. What you don't realise is that children are more informed than adults, these are not the days when we look to the sky and say' aeroplane bring a baby for me' they know were babies come from. These are the children of the now generation and not yesteryear. Congrats to him. The problem with us adults, we are afraid of this generation, because we didn't know we think they should be the same.

If every word we say, or in this case, type, is written in the book of life, then perhaps you might want to take an English language course again. It seems you have forgotten the little things, like proper sentence structure, grammar, capitalization and punctuation.

We are not the ones to be judged in the end for what others do. We should be above all the hate and bigotry spewed here. I hurt in my heart for the people getting bullied for their beliefs (on both sides). I am a follower of Christ and with that I also feel I have no right to judge someone else for their life when I am so far from perfect its not even funny. If they want to be married who are we to say no. If you don't believe that way stay away. Its just that simple.
Just let them be and worry about your own souls, beliefs, etc. You all are wasting energy trying to change each others mind.

    • Randy

First I'm glad you are a Christian as am I. The Bible says man is not to lay down with man and woman is not to lay down with woman. The reason alot of us are taking a Christian stand against this issue is because of they are trying to promote this lifestyle and want to make all think it is natural and nothing is wrong with it. They say the Bible is either wrong, outdated, or needs to be more lenient. If this were true should we be more lenient about all sin such as murder, molesting children, stealing, etc. If they would live their life in private, they would have privacy. If I were to commit adultery and then go out and tell every one its ok and try to promote that lifestyle, would that be ok? We do not hate gays. We do not want anything bad to happen to them. But because of our faith we can not promote this lifestyle.

If you want to keep all the old testimant laws then lets say, for instance, all the women on these forums shouldnt be talking, not to be a bigot, just saying. Or let's not work on Sunday, or let's forgive anyone who goes out and murders their kid because the voice In their heads told them to. You do realize god did not write the bible. His laws that are written are interpretations written by man. You say gays are pushing their lifestyle on you. Then what are you doing to them by pushing your personal religious belief into public law., judging how they find happiness. Judge not lest ye be judged yourself. Just saying

I believe this, I believe that, Hmmm seems to be the old adage that our forefathers came here to remove does it not?
Freedom from religious persecution, I believe that is what they came here for, Also on the original topic of the story, I believe that the kid has more potential for love and understanding. He has learned that to judge is to judge yourself, are you truly worthy of "your" god's love and admiration? Ask yourself this, God gave man the ability for "free will" that means i can do what i want with my actions. Ok, then who are you to police those said actions? That would go against what your god wanted, to give everyone FREE WILL!

I'm not a religious person, but I would think that if there was a sole creator and that creator created man in their own image, then shouldn't this argument be pointed at that creator? Well. Poor little child already his mind has been perverted. then people ask why would God allow children to remain here for the great tribulation? u see the answer. at age 5 children retain better what they see and what the hear and what they learn through hearing and seeing at this stage in their lives becomes a part of who they are. with all that this child is hearing and seeing in this world where pervertion and hate is the norm and where most children are taught that it is wonderful to hate God and His people and His laws and that it is just find to curse and blasfeme God and that there is no God. well what is the concequence??? A world where Sin is rampant and where normal is anormal. where those that try to live a clean and holy life are hated and labeled crazy and cursed and ridiculed by evil doers because we won't go along with their perversion. where the Word of God is hated because it's a mirror where we could look at ourselves and see who we really are. to all of those who are the real christians and will not submit to doctrines of devils and to agree with sin get ready cause these are the evil days. that Jesus spoke of in Matthew 24. The Lord Jesuschrist is coming. those that have an ear let them hear. Get ready now!!!! read Psalm 14;1-6.

Judy, no one cares what you believe or how you try to live your life. The issue is when you try to force your beliefs onto others through illogical legislation backed up only by a 2000 year old book full of heavily edited and translated stories. Stop playing the "persecuted Christian" card. People refusing to accept your beliefs and telling you to stop trying to convert the rest of the world is not persecution. Get over yourself and live YOUR life how you want to, and leave everyone else alone.

Please go spill your vile hate mongering somewhere else. You have no true grasp of Jesus teachings. Everyone is gods creation. Gods children. We are told to love one another and to to judge. It's not our place. This child said nothing about hating god nor did he do this in a blaspheming manner. He's 10. Not to sound demeaning, but children don't have that capacity for hate, which is why Jesus taugh us to be as a child, innocent. Stop judging others. Stop arguing with such hate in your heart and love your neighbor for who they are. So once again, I call you a hate monger, you and anyone else, on either side, that spill your distorted and "hand picked" views on gods word.

well looks like a lot of folks here think like a 5th grader. If i want to marry my teddy bear, who are you to keep me? My question is why does anyone care about being married? It should be a private and/or relgious/spritual matter not a government matter. Marriage has no credibility anymore; more than 50% of folks fail at it. I guess it makes a lot of divoce attorneys very wealthy

thats exactly what YOU have if you do not realize that marriage is a legally binding contract.

i have no problem with stripping away all the legal protections of marriage and let all the religions perform "marriages" excluding anyone they deem "deviant", so as long as there are civil unions (or something of the sort) which deals with the legal ramifications of entering a joint legal contract.

but no, all you see is OMG teh Ghey! and get all upset that they want the same rights as you. This is basically the jim crow of marriage.

    July 31, 2012 at 12:09 pm |

Yeah, because what you really need is marital advice from adult bigots instead of a kid who hasn't been brainwashed into hating people yet.

No Andrew, he has been brainwashed into believing a subject he knows absolutely nothing about which means some adult had to feed it to him.

The Decline, Really? A 5th grader, say 11 years old, isn't old enough to recognize injustice and inequality in the world? Have you met any 11-12 year olds lately? Children can be incredibly sensitive, empathetic and insightful.... it’s growing up in this society that turns them in to hateful, hurtful bigots and bullies.

I think everyone has a right to be happy. Just because your religion has certain beliefs, that does not mean everyone else is in tune with your beliefs. There are many religions with many differences one religion is not greater than the other (My belief). If you are a true follower of God (which ever you believe in), then you should know that only God can judge you. If you are judging people for what they believe in, you are attempting to play the role of God. Quiet honestly I do not think God will take that very lightly. God is the one who decides what will happen to individuals, so let him deal with it. I have yet to see two men getting married and being struck by lighting. I guess it does not bother God too much.

Papasan, you were probably the kid that ran around telling everyone that Santa wasn't real also huh. Let people believe what they wanna believe. Agnostic or Atheist, running around telling people god isn't real doesn't make you any better than a Jehovah walking up to your door. I have my beliefs...But Im not gonna run around forcing it on others.

Ray do you know what is ironic some of these posters have Pastors that are gay but they don't even know. The pastor blinding their eyes in the church because he don't want his congregation to know the type of life he lives. Remember Jimmy Swaggat?????. lets say no more.

Don't like gay marriage? Then don't have one. Don't like contraception? Don't use it. Don't believe in abortion? Don't get one. Don't like guns? Don't buy one. Don't like your rights being taken away? Then STOP trying to take away the rights of others. If gay marriage "threatens" your marriage, then your marriage was worthless to begin with.

  36. I have thoughts

Here's an idea how about we get rid of the secular side of marriage. We repeal all laws regarding the joining of any two individuals in their private lives. Then there will be nothing to argue about. I see two kids (religious zealots and nosey crusaders) fighting like two kids over a toy (marriage). So when children fight over toys you just remove the toy. Abolish all secular benefits of marriage in the government and state. And then everyone will have civil unions.

None of the people that are pro gay marriage can ever articulate anything they disagree with. If so, they themselves would be judging. As they are judging Christians for having a standard. So anything goes is what pro gay marriage people say but then they turn around and judge rather quickly. Very hateful and hypocritical. Why are these people bashing and judging Christians for what they believe in. Is this what freedom looks like?

    July 31, 2012 at 11:08 am |
    • Urziel

The only ones I go after are the ones that try to foist their beliefs upon others. What you do in your personal life is not my problem. It's the ones who think they are the morality police that I will call out.

      July 31, 2012 at 11:38 am |
    • Heather

Many people who are pro gay marriage can articulate what they disagree with. This kid is in 5th grade... how many 5th graders can really articulate anything? People who are for gay marriage disagree with discrimination. Why should gay people not have the same right to marriage that straight people do? Just because someone disagrees with what Christians believe does not make them hateful or hypocritical. I don't bash or judge you for your beliefs and you shouldn't assume that just because someone is for gay marriage makes them anti-Christian. Get a grip!

      July 31, 2012 at 11:44 am |
    • Agnostic

Why are Christians always the one to judge every other person gay or not? Don't believe me? Ask a "Christian" about someone of Muslim faith, ask them about tattoos, ask them about drinking (those that don't have a problem with it already), ask them about parents who give their children a choice to be baptized or to go to church, ask them about science, ask them about evolution.

It's funny that you are trying to cast the same negative light over the pro-gay movement that "Christians" cast on themselves. Doesn't it say in the Bible "Judge not, less ye be judged"? And before you start quoting the verse that deems "man on man" to be a sin, may I point out that according to the bible, eating meat on a Friday is a hell worthy sin. Times change, people change, and ideas change. It's called progression of the HUMAN race. I mean, come on, 16 years ago we would of never had thought there would be a Black President in America.

How exactly would a "Gay Marriage" effect your life anyway? Does their happiness and wanting to be together somehow make yours less dwindle away? I just find it extremely funny that a "normal" marriage has a divorce rate of 50% (or is it higher now) in this country, but two men or two women that have deemed each other as "life partners" can stay together for an entire lifetime.

My only hope is that "Christians" can stop manipulating a book, that is only supposed to be used as inspiration and not complete worship, to fit their arguments. I believe the Catholic Priests did that at one time as well. Oh yeah, and I put quotation marks around "Christians" because a true Christian will never judge.

      July 31, 2012 at 12:38 pm |
      • The Decline

Agnostic – Ummmm, when you ask someone their opinion, then what do you expect? If I asked you about Christianity you would have a rather negative opinion, and wouldnt that make you judgmental? Just saying if you ask ppl about their views you will get a judgmental answer regardless of your beliefs.

        July 31, 2012 at 12:48 pm |
      • dondijon

So, please enlighten me, where exactly in the King James (CHRISTIAN) bible is it stated that eating meat on a friday is forbiden? It seems to me that this is a Catholic practice adoped from worship of the philistine fish god drego... Funniest thing, seems being A Christian and a Catholic are two very different things. we are forbiden from following pagan worship, they have been builded upon it. Read scripture, Cephas (PETER) was never in Rome.

So, if it isn't ok for two men or two women to marry...should my husband and I get divorced simply because he's white and I'm black? To me, it's the same thing. Some of the people that share this country with us see that as wrong as well, but should the KKK get to decide if I get to be happy or not? It's my life to live, not anyone else's and I think that's all that really matters in the end. If you get to pursue happiness, why can't everyone? AND...how many people are in the Army, Navy, ect that 2% is such a small number? As of September 30, 2010 (I know, almost 2 years ago, but still), there were 1,430,895 people in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. If my calculator is right, that is 28,617.9 people that are "gay" protecting our country...that may be a small amount of people out of the total, but a pretty large amount when you look at how small you think it is.

Seems many people are anti gay supporters until their own child/grandchild declares that they in fact are gay. Those children may be aged 2,4, 6, 8 etc.. now but can you imagine the hurt they will feel growing up knowing their parent is/was against THEM? I believe it is only when you have someone close to you who is gay you realize it wasn't their choice to be gay. It was how they were made:) That child is the same person you loved, who you cared for. The same child who made you laugh, gave you a sense of pride. The child you would protect with your life. Does it matter then if they are gay??

Weell, if you want me to argue with that. Humans are the root of all evil, seeing as both money and religion are human constructs, not that money is even logically an evil thing. Get rid of money, and society will collapse, as most people do not create anything barterable, so a barter system would be difficult or impossible. Our society has gotten to a point where most social structures are too complex to be supported without some form of currency.

I'm not sure if any kid grows up and says that they want to be ridiculed, persecuted, shamed, beaten, bullied, hated, or killed. This is what gays face daily. I cant imagine a world where so many people would chose a lifestyle where loving someone is literally a matter of life or death/rights or no rights. All this over the "normalcy" that is trying be forced down the throats of Americans. I think we are smarter than that. I have seen a little 5 year old boy who prefers to play with dolls and loves the color pink. Who taught him that? Do you know his father beats him senseless screaming "you will not be gay and do gay things!" If that is normal, I want nothing to do with it...

The word 'marriage' has no meaning either religiously or civilly. The union of 2 people, either by a particular religion's clergy or by a government official, is only a contract recognized by the government. What is the difference who the signers of that contract happen to be? Besides in the bible, Adam and Eve were never married (not formally) so does that mean (from a religious point of view) we are all illegitimate? In fact in some religions, if you are married by a government office and not by a clergy, you are not really married. Finally, as to all those people who want to 'save marriage', how many of them are divorced?

This means nobody escapes Final JUDGEMENT and when finally judged, it will be by the standard by wich you judge others.

Why are gays so eager to have the relationship up in lights? Easy, because if enough people agree with them; that amount of support may validate them thinkin that there plight is noble and socially acceptable and therefore, right. It's evident with this Chick-Fil-A saga that if a company or an individual disagrees with the lifestyle, that if the person in question disagrees, they will use pseudo legal manuevers to compel you not only to accept their lifestyle, but to support and agree with it. Their goal is to de-sensitize small children so future generations accept it without question

Every reputable medical, psychological and psychiatric organization in the western world says you are DEAD WRONG. You're just a garden-variety bigot.

Not so. Scientific research proves on is not born that way. If that were true, identical twins would both be that way 100% of the time. However that is not the case. So experiences during development are not the factor that determines ones path in life.

Err, you have a concrete definition of "normal"? And your definition of "normal" should be the standard for 300 million citizens of the United States? Kind of an egotistical stance, that everyone else must adhere to your definition of normal. Nazi Germany considered it "normal" that Jewish people were unworthy, and millions of human beings should be eradicated from the face of the earth. Let's define normal as love, kindness, acceptance.
Intolerance, and telling other human beings how to live or not live their lives is not "normal".

Bryan people have always tried to push what they feel should be accepted in society because it makes them feel unique and recognized. We can't effect an alternative opinion in others by being insulting and awful to them. To suggest they be rounded up in a concentration camp is not an acceptable option.

Since you seem to think you know so damn much, pray tell, what is "normal?" And why do you care what two consenting adults want to do?
