Pew report: Record numbers of Latinos in U.S. colleges, public schools

(CNN) - Latino student populations have been on an upward trajectory in the U.S. for decades, and a report released Monday says the group’s growth reached record levels last year, both in public schools and colleges.
The number of 18- to 24-year-old Latinos in college topped 2 million in 2011, accounting for 16.5% of all enrollments, according to a report by the Pew Hispanic Center. The number means Latino representation in U.S. colleges and universities is on par with the percentage of Latinos among the U.S. population, also 16.5%.
Record numbers of Latinos are also finishing college, with 112,000 earning associate degrees and 140,000 earning bachelor’s degrees. Pew states both statistics are new highs, yet Latinos still lag behind whites (1.2 million bachelor’s degrees and 553,000 associates) and blacks (165,000 bachelor’s and 114,000 associates) in degree attainment.
“Some of the growth in Hispanic college enrollments simply reflects continued growth in the nation’s Hispanic population - since 1972, the number of Hispanic 18- to 24-year-olds has grown nearly five-fold, rising from 1.3 million then to 6 million in 2011,” the report said.
However, population alone cannot explain the numbers, as eligibility to attend college also is a factor. In 2011, 76% of Latinos age 18 to 24 had completed high school, another record and a 3.5% improvement over 2010 numbers.
At the pre-kindergarten-through-12th-grade level, Latinos made up 23.9% of students in 2011, another record, according to the report from the nonpartisan Washington-based think tank.
To break the 2011 numbers down further, Latinos made up 26% of the country’s nursery school and kindergarten students, 25% of elementary school students and 21% of high school students, the report states.
The number is primed to continue increasing for the next two decades, with the U.S. Census Bureau forecasting that Latinos will make up a third of the nation’s 3- to 17-year-old children by 2036.
The numbers confirm Latinos as the largest minority group on American campuses, and they show what appears to be a growing divide between Latino students and their African-American counterparts.
Black college enrollment in 2011 was down 3% from 2010, dropping from 1.69 million to 1.64 million, while Latino enrollment was up 15%, from 1.81 million to 2.08 million. At four-year colleges, Latino enrollment jumped from 1 million in 2010 to 1.2 million in 2011, while black enrollment held steady at 1.1 million.
While the numbers are records, according to Pew, Latino students have been outpacing blacks in some student population categories for years.
In 1975, 6.94 million adults who finished high school went to college. About 309,000 were Latino and 665,000 were black. Thirty years later, the overall number jumped to 10.83 million, with 1.22 million of them Latino and 1.3 million of them African-American.
Latinos first topped African-Americans in public school enrollment in 2001. Back then, the respective numbers were 8.82 million to 8.65 million. Today, the number is 12.45 million to 8.27 million, according to Pew.
And while there’s a starkly lower dropout rate among African-American youngsters (399,000, or 9%, of all students in 2011) than Latinos (975,000, or 16.3%, of all students), Latinos have been sending more kids to college for the last two years as well.
Some other figures from the report:
- The number of white students in college jumped 3% between 2010 and 2011, from 7.66 million to 7.88 million. Meanwhile, the Asian student population plummeted 8%, from 811,000 to 748,000, in that same time.
- While Latinos make up 25% of the public elementary school rolls, compared to blacks, who compose 14%, the numbers are closer once kids move to high school: Latinos 21% and blacks 16%.
- There were 2.1 million Latino students in U.S. colleges last year, a 15% increase over 2010. The number increased 24% the year before. Latino enrollment made up 74% of the growth in total enrollments last year.
- Last year marked the first time more Latinos than blacks enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities, but they have outnumbered blacks at two-year colleges since 2010.
- Whites still rank No. 1 in high school completion, with at least 86% for the last 20 years, but Latinos and African-Americans are both closing the gap. While 88.3% of whites completed high school in 2011, 76.3% of Latinos and 81.4% of blacks could make the same claim. In 1993, the gap was far greater among whites (86.8%), Latinos (60.9%) and blacks (74.9%).
- Despite a student population almost triple that of Hispanics, whites had a similar number of dropouts last year: 1 million out of 17.63 million white students and 975,000 out of 5.97 million Latino students.
- With 1.72 million degrees (68.83% of all those conferred), whites earned more than twice as many bachelor’s and associate degrees as the other three groups combined - blacks (278,749 or 11.15%), Latinos (252,527 or 10.1%) and Asians (161,443 or 6.5%) - according to 2010 statistics. Whites, of course, make up roughly 72% of the U.S. population, compared with Latinos (about 16%) blacks (about 13%) and Asians (about 5%).

Already happening…. I am a 4 year bachelor graduate and LATINO from Mexican descendants. As i was walking to my car I watched 5 white workers doing construction. Now don't get me wrong I like most whites i meet but dam it felt good to see the tables turn. As i got in my car and headed to my nice job under A/C, benefits, good pay..... 🙂 Then I talked to my other Latino friend and same... he had some construction guys doing work at his house. He was thinking the same thing as he kicked up his feet and watched them work. 🙂 Ahhh what a beauty!!!!!!

More than a beginner engineer, that depends on the industry and oh so many factors. How about a geneticist? Doctor? Molecular Biologist? Those industries make a ton of money, much more than your union buds losing ground to technological advancements do. Many Latinos have entered these fields already.

On the latino or latina question. The dictionary is incomplete. Latinos and latinas are Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or French. In latin languages some words are masculine and some words are feminine depending on the application. Hispanics are spanish and latin and of course the roots are from Spain.
What is called latin America is made of of all sorts of cultures which continue to grow since the original colonists from Europe settled. Also keep in mind the America's is a melting pot. From Canada to Argentina and everywhere in between. American applies to inhabitants in the continents of North Central and South America.
The natives are brown and are not latinos. Speaking spanish doesn't make one latin as does speaking english doesn't make one English. Example US. blacks speak english due to the slavery, Natives in the US. speak english in the reservations. Does this make natives english? And in Central America blacks speak spanish, in South America Portuguese, Dutch, French or spanish or english depending on the country. Please also note the creole languages of the Caribbean islands
Lastly Asia is the natives of the Americas origins which have been traced back from the time of the crossing of the baring straits by foot from such places as Manchuria thousands of years ago.
They are also African because the Spaniards brought in over 100,000 black slaves to Mexico. Lot of Chinese blood also.

But only one poster that I read mentioned the real reason for illegal immigration – economics and American employers hiring the immigrants at low wages. If all you anti-illegal alien bashers and Mexico haters really want to make an impact on illegal immigration, then you need to demand the government embark on a concerted enforcement effort with severe penalities that targets employers. Throw a few corporate CEOs and Board Directors into prison and you'll notice a severe drop in illegal immigration. I saw a program on Little Haiti in Florida on TV the other night. I could not believe all the Haitian gangs and the slums and poverty that followed all these people who immigrated here. I've seen a few comments here stating that illegal immigrants can not get into college.....that is plain WRONG! I used to think that as well, that one had to prove citizenship or show a school visa or something.
Google Kennesaw University Georgia Immigration law. A KSU student was here illegally, had been educated in our elementary schools and high school and was at a public college that received funding from state/federal tax payers. When she was pulled over for a traffic violation and had no drivers license she was arrested, where it was then discovered she was illegal and deportation started. The College, the professors, and the students came out in droves to protest and keep here until she finished her education. That was until it was discovered she paid IN STATE TUITION!!! Many of the students, citizens, were paying Out of State tuition while an illegal was paying in state. Needless to say the college kids stopped supporting the illegal girl.
UCLA just started the "Dream College" where illegal immigrants can go for 30% of the normal tuition rates. Someone please tell me the fairness in all of this?

In addition, the report showed that immigrants affect 15 different executive agencies of the U.S. government.
Earned Income Tax Credit-fraud is rampant and IRS does little to verify existence of children. Clean Air and Climate Change-these goals are unattainable as long as US population grows-driven by unending immigration. Emergency medical treatment-US taxpayer money provides $250 million a year to help hospitals defray costs for illegal aliens. Bureau of Land Management-the Interior Department spends $1 million to mitigate environmental damage done by illegals crossing US southern border. Migrant educational grants-intended to help states educate children of illegal workers. More fraud from over-counting. Office of Foreign Labor Certification-immigrant workers depress wages for US citizens resulting in declines in federal revenues at $100 billion annually.
As shown on CBS with Katie Couric this past week, 300,000 pregnant Mexican women cross the border to birth their babies, known as 'anchor babies', in American hospitals at an average cost of $6,000.00 per birth with no complications. If the child suffers heart defects, Downs Syndrome, Autism or any other problems, the costs jump to $500,000.00 with long term care into the millions of dollars. All footed by the America taxpayer!
Not mentioned in Couric's report, that child enjoys free breakfasts and lunches through 13 years of publicly funded education at an average cost of $7,000.00 per year. Additionally, American taxpayers foot the bill for all medical and housing assistance for the child and mother. More hidden costs add up with ESL classes to teach the child English. Connecticut alone suffers 120 languages in their schools while Colorado suffers over 40 foreign languages that cripple their classrooms.
The list of expenses paid for by American taxpayer soars with time and numbers of illegal aliens. Additionally, legal immigrants sponsor their relatives in chain migration and family reunification at US taxpayer expense.
These immigrants take American jobs while they burn American taxpayer funds for immigrant welfare. This all happens while the US national debt approaches $10 trillion. Immigrants flood into this country while jobs cascade out to China where we owe $1 trillion in T-bills as of 2008. Additionally, we suffer a $700 billion annual trade deficit.
Once those illegal aliens hit this country, half of them work off the books and do not pay $401 billion dollars annually according to the 2005 Bear Stearns Report. Additionally, they form the second largest underground economy in the world. Both legal and illegal immigrants send $80 billion back to their home countries in cash transfers on untaxed money.
When does it end? Not any time soon! Who pays? You do! Like the proverbial golden calf, the United States taxpayer bleeds to death daily while our president and Congress fiddle, faddle and scratch their generous rear ends while they facilitate the death of America's middle class.
Our politicians create the problems they campaign to solve; but once in office, as John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have proven with their time in the U.S. Senate-they work more against Americans than for them. The proof in the aforementioned report is, as they say, "in the pudding!"

I live in Mexico. When the people from Mexico come to the USA their work ethic changes for the better. I know because it is hard to get anyone to come to work or finish a job here in Mexico. I would say 80% of the time. From lawyers to construction workers. You literally have to try and chase them down. Most things here are done half assed here in Mexico. They do not take as much pride in their work. From Mechanics to constuction workers to attorneys and up the chain. Because of codes, and people demanding better quality in the USA the people Mexican people have had to change so they could survive here. They have had to improve there work ethics and quality.
Many people do not send there kids to school here in Mexico, but work at an early age. It is an excuse because the Mennonite children work extremely hard all day and are self schooled in the night. They are extremely intelligent children and will turn out as productive as their parents. I drove to Namiquipa here in Mexico the other day. My Mexican wife was amazed at how clean and perfect the Mennonite community was. It looked even more organized then communities in the USA. The crops were groomed and they was not a piece of trash on the side of any road. Everybody was out working. I asked her why the Mexican people were not more like the Mennonites. She said I do not know. I told her if I did not know I was in Mexico I would have thought I was in the USA.
There are good people in Mexico, but the problem is there are way too many bad. It is because of the culture has caused it. That is why the people are fortress-ed into their houses like prisons. The problem is with all the illegal people coming in, they are the poorer and more likely to commit crimes. Doing so as the cross the border. America has to pay a big price for these successful illegal Latinos as well as the poor. Because many are using the system. Hopefully the majority are Latino Americans and are using the system and paying just like all other Americans. Koodo's for those that have helped to make the Latino American community better. I know what you mean. I have to pay for my son's food at school, all the other "poor" kids get theirs free. Those "poor" kids have the name brand stuff, while my son gets cheap stuff so I can make ends meet. Right on Dave! My sister-inlaw is Latino and an American but because she is Latino her whole college education starting with a BA to and almost completed PHD, was given to her without paying a penny. Now this is not because of high GPA scores. The average middle class Americans do not get any breaks unless you want to call "student loans" a break. I love my country but I wish just once would give a break to non minority college students. Guess what, since we have 1% of the population very wealthly that leaves the rest of us stuggling to keep up with the very basics in life never mind a college education. Wonder why most Americans don't believe or trust in Politicians? All they think of day and night is to get votes.
Did you also know that the minorities complained a few years back that the SAT test was too hard for them and they couldn't get into college. The United States lowered the scores for them for the SAT, to become a Fireman and a Police officers. Seems like the minorities want what the whites have, but don't want to work for it!

This is extremelly simplified, but Latinos are a mix of various Spanish and native cultures – both of which have history in the USA that seriously predates any white-eye posting on this board. Also, not evey Latino is Mexican, not every Mexican (American) or Latino is illegal. Heck, Puerto Rico is part of US. I have a Mexican American pal whose great grandparents immigrated here about the same time as my Finnish ones did. This same friend put himself through university by working at it as a janitor for 11 years and now teaches in the poorest school district in the nation. I also know Latinos in northern New Mexico whose families ties to that area go back hundreds of years – well before a single Pilgrim set foot here. The oldest homes, cities and churches in the US are not on the east coast, they are in the Southwest and built by Natives, Spanish and Latinos.
There is enough racism and ignorance to go around. The article above treats Latino as a race, it is not. Grouping different races from nearly 30 countries to create a supergroup then treating them as a race is racist offensive. Mexico like all Latin America countries are ex European colonies just like the US. This "they were here longer than the Pilgrims" is ridiculous. Up and down the Americas there are indigenous groups that still exist today who struggle for power within the ex European colony they live in. It's tiresome when cowards in Latin American countries use them for their anti-American rhetoric when they do NOTHING to help them in their own countries.

I attended a public school 1-8th grade in a mixed neighborhood in NY before switching to private school. I actually liked having 30% Latinos in my classes; it was GREAT for the curve! Their grades were so low, even the ones born here, that the rest of us became instant stellar students. They'd fail even the most basic tests, thus a grading curve was introduced so more would pass.
Thats why we loved the blacks in school too.

I can relate. That's the way it is with Muslims in public schools in Dearborn. They're so dumb that they turn their houses into third world shacks by not keeping them up...I'm not kidding...one family was so dumb, tthat hey tried to change the light bulbs and broke every single one in the house by turning them the wrong way. Then, they just sat there in the dark, not understanding why the lights didn't work; and then, they didn't understand what the lint trap in the dryer is for, so they threw it away because it was full of lint. After that, they couldn't figure out why there was lint flying everywhere when they tried to dry clothes.

Hola Tacoman no that is not what I am saying. My husband is from Mexico, and came here doing the jobs that Americans did not want to do. When there was no work, he went back home. He did not have children here, bring any of his relatives here, never received a penny of assistance. He worked hard and eventually received his papers. It was later that I met him where I work, and I had never met anyone in my life with such a strong work ethic. He came here to the U.S. just like my grandparents from Norway, Germany. Learned the language, worked hard, supported himself, never received a handout from anybody. Where I work now, there is such abuse of our welfare system, it is sickening. Thanks for being correct and living the American dream the way it was intended to be lived.

I live in Mexico. When the people from Mexico come to the USA their work ethic changes for the better. I know because it is hard to get anyone to come to work or finish a job here in Mexico. I would say 80% of the time. From lawyers to construction workers. You literally have to try and chase them down. Most things here are done half assed here in Mexico. They do not take as much pride in their work. From Mechanics to constuction workers to attorneys and up the chain. Because of codes, and people demanding better quality in the USA the people Mexican people have had to change so they could survive here. They have had to improve there work ethics and quality.
Many people do not send there kids to school here in Mexico, but work at an early age. It is an excuse because the Mennonite children work extremely hard all day and are self schooled in the night. They are extremely intelligent children and will turn out as productive as their parents. I drove to Namiquipa here in Mexico the other day. My Mexican wife was amazed at how clean and perfect the Mennonite community was. It looked even more organized then communities in the USA. The crops were groomed and they was not a piece of trash on the side of any road. Everybody was out working. I asked her why the Mexican people were not more like the Mennonites. She said I do not know. I told her if I did not know I was in Mexico I would have thought I was in the USA.
There are good people in Mexico, but the problem is there are way too many bad. It is because of the culture has caused it. That is why the people are fortress-ed into their houses like prisons. The problem is with all the illegal people coming in, they are the poorer and more likely to commit crimes. Doing so as the cross the border. America has to pay a big price for these successful illegal Latinos as well as the poor. Because many are using the system. Hopefully the majority are Latino Americans and are using the system and paying just like all other Americans. Koodo's for those that have helped to make the Latino American community better. Would be interesting to know how many of those were illegal and used American taxpayers money to get their education. A lot off topic, but so is a lot of things posted here.

In reply to Tacoman. There are successful people here in Mexico. Look at the Mennonites of German blood. They are getting rich here and are exemplary and honest people. How come they can do it in Mexico, but the other Mexican people are having a problem. The biggest reason they come to the USA is because of all the handouts. Many are still complaining in the USA and they have a hard time making it. The culture they were born in has molded them to fail as adults. Why are there so many Mexican gangs. It is because there parents do not pass down a legacy or path to do so. They do not know how to guide their children to succeed. They have brought these principles from Mexico. Again their are exceptions to the rules. We have a black president and it looks as if the black Americans are faring worse then the Mexican Americans. Many black gangs also. Look to Africa and you will see a culture that is poor and not productive just as in Mexico as far as Education goes. It has got to be cultural or not one black or Mexican could be successful. We know that is not the truth. Because I have an education and know how to make money I came to Mexico and am doing quite well. There are so many opportunities here, but not enough educated people to take advantage of the opportunities that abound. You do not have to come to the USA to live well.
I don't think people would illegally cross the border unless they could see it is worth it. It seems from what you said, with the starving kids and no clothes, is that Mexico is a land with zero opportunity and horrible living conditions. It seems the real problem is that Mexico is a horrible place to live for a lot of people, and for whatever reason, is not getting better any time soon. What are your thoughts on this? Is Mexico really so bad of a place? And why isn't it getting better? Is it just the drug lords, bad economy, a cultural thing? I'm not from Mexico and I've only visited a few times (Mexicali, Tijuana, La Paz) so I really don't know all of the issues going on there.

There are people in Mexico that are no different than people in the United States. They hate all things American as many here hate all things Mexican. People here want to reclaim the land and people there want to reclaim the land, neither will happen. I remember in the old days when any Mexican that migrated and remained in the U.S. was considered a traitor in Mexico. Illegals have been around forever, whether they are Mexican, Asian, and European or from countless other countries and nationalities. The only reason there are illegals coming is because our government provides the incentives. There are countless non profit groups that educate illegal immigrants on obtaining benefits this includes health care providers. These groups are founded by federal and state grants designed to provide these services. We are our own worst enemy. But what can we expect from uneducated lower class people chasing their tails.
This has got to be fixed and mass deportation of illegals is the way to fix it. I don't understand why those in power have failed the American Citizen by not taking broad and aggressive action to rid the United States of non citizens to assure that the sanctity of the American Citizen is preserved. I called CNN and requested that they follow up on Tuesday news article stating that there is now 2.08 million Hispanics enrolled in American colleges and report how many of these 2.08 million are PAYING THEIR OWN WAY AND HOW MUCH IS OUR TAX DOLLARS COVERING–Talking tuition, room & board, books Etc. I doubt we could get specific financial aid figures for the group of students researched in this Pew Hispanic Center report, as the center's research dealt with questions about enrollment, not questions about how people pay for school. The National Center for Education Statistics' most recent data about racial and ethnic breakdowns of financial aid are from 2007-2008 - it says 92% of full-time, full-year black undergraduate students received financial aid, 85% of Hispanic students, 77% of white students, 68% of Asian students, 80% of Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander students and 83% of students or two or more races. In this case, financial aid includes grants (which could include need-based grants, merit-only scholarships, tuition waivers and employer tuition reimbursements etc.) and loans, which can be through the government or through private lenders.

Have you ever bothered to study the sociology of the immigrant experience, Fortress? If you had, you might find it interesting that those on the bottom rung of the socio-economic ladder generally take issue with the most recent group to arrive in this country. Look back through American history, and you will find this pattern repeating, with the Irish being the first group discriminated against, followed by the Italians, and now the "Hispanics". Those who have succeeded in the United States don't take issue with those who are coming here following the same dream. Throughout this country, hard-working Hispanics are doing the work no "American" would perform. You might read a recent article in the New York Times this week about the dearth of available labor on farms in California and the adverse impact on farmers there. Try and educate yourself a little; you will find people are generally more open to discussion if you deal in facts, not fear-mongering.

I did pay and im still paying for my school and I pay my taxes. Oh yes, and now I own a restaurant that's worth a lot of money and I employ about 10 people. All of that in 10 years. So you cant really say that Latinos going to school is bad. I mean where in the world does that make sense?

My Liberal town and county will tax me more to pay for EOSL classes, food stamps, free transportation, medicals and they will bring down the standard of house built by the uncoothed latino's. We are PROGRESSING.
My father was in public school in the 1930's, and there were not formal ESL classes. Instead, individual teachers had to work with the many (more than half of his class, including him) students who had English as their second language. My dad did not speak a bit of English until he went to public school.
Why do you guys think the situation is any different than it was before? A lot more money and resources were wasted by not formalizing ESL programs.
On the other hand, I am for English being the official language of the US, and the government or nonprofit agencies offering ANYONE who doesn't know English interpreters for government paper. However, that should exclude driver's licenses as knowing English is necessary to drive on our roads.

Well this report doesn’t mention how this affects our local tax bases. Immigrations has been an issue since the time of the romans. Those people where smart enough back then to know your population must stay within its limits of generating tax revenue. So for years they would push nomadic people from their lands. Here we are some 2500 years later and the people in Washington are too stupid to see that. OUR country is current in debt for 15,874,365,457,260. Do you think maybe we should be reviewing why OUR government can’t seem to enforce our current immigration laws? Do you think maybe we start voting out the people who feel we shouldn’t upset the illegal immigrants? And do you think an explosion in our population is going to help your college educated kids find a job that pays more than 45K a year?

Finally someone who knows what they are talking about! My husband is from Mexico, I am from the U.S. He came here in the 1980's doing the work that Americans did not want to do. When there was no work for him, he went back to Mexico and waited until he was called to come back to work. He did not marry, and have a hundred children. He did not receive 1 penny of help from our government. He did not pull and tug on any government programs for help. I now work in a factory as a translator, where unemployment here in the US is out of control, and yet, I watch everyday as more and more illegal people are hired to work here. We have health insurance offered, none of them take it because they can get free assistance from our government, while me and my family have to pay for ours. They all drive brand new vehicles because the have rent assistance, food stamps, free health care and anything else they need, FREE. I for one am tired of paying for all of these services to people that should never have received them to begin with. They don't need a SS# to obtain Welfare, Food Stamps, Medicaid, Housing Asst., etc. Matter of fact, want you go to your local DFCS office around the middle of the month and see how many Hispanics are in their applying and renewing for benefits. They come in the middle of the month because they don't want to be seen by the whites and blacks that come in on the first and last of the month. I guess they want American Citizens to believe as you want AC to believe and that is that they(Hispanics) are not a burden on the system. However, I can tell you for sure that they are.

@zaaquir, not sure what part of the country you’re from but in California an illegal without a valid social security card cannot receive benefits such as food stamps (EBT), welfare (Cash EBT), Medicaid, medi-cal, or subsidized housing. But then there are those that will educate people on ways around the system. I’ve been to the HHS offices.

You are completely correct, I went to a Walmart in the older part of the city where I was raised and I was flabbergasted that I was the minority. Further, there was little doubt that the vast majority were illegal as could not speak any English. A news report to that part of the city said that crime, mainly theft, is up over 200%. There is probably no correlation, since that would of course be "racist".

My father was born with golden blond hair, a white complexion and is average height, he is a Latino. I'm glad our schools are fully funded and educating our citizens to world class standards so that our schools can continue to accept the onslaught of foreign nationals that don't speak English. Don't worry so much about speaking English...in due time most kids learn the language to a very acceptable level. I do take offense being assumed I speak Spanish by the color of my skin. There are too many racial stereotypes in American society. These stereotypes are one of the factors that does put huge hindrances towards our young people in the educational system. If you get rid of the racial stereotypes they probably would perform better. I agree. I have taught for many years and just retired at the end of last year. Now I can say that our school was 90% Hispanic and over half of them were illegal. We were not allowed to question anything pertaining to that issue, although many, many of their birth certificates were from Mexico and they would just show up, speaking no English at all to enroll their children in school. We had to hire more bilingual interpreters each year. So much energy and resources was diverted to teach them English and then catch them up academically, that the anglo kids had to just fend for themselves. Sad.
Why is anyone surprised about this Obama has let illegal immigrants come in to this country, let them go for crimes commited and give them welfare, food stamp and free housing as more are lining up to come in for a free ride.

Not all hispanics are illegals. But you would be naive to think that a significant portion of these numbers do not include illegal immigrants. The fact that our government is compelled to educate these people using our tax revenues means that there is less education dollars being spent per student. Meaning that dollars are being diverted from students that belong to families of taxpaying americans to students who are from families that are not contributing to tax revenues. In other words, it is forced charity.
I agree with your statement. I grew up in Miami since the boat lift from Cuba. There were all granted citizenship by President Carter in light of their situation. Many of my classmates were from Cuba and they were outstanding citizens despite their initial problems with English. The Catholic churches in my neighbor supported the Cuban children who came over without their parents and they have more than paid back America for our compassion. With regard to the Mexican immigrants, I see them here everyday mowing lawns and building new homes. There are no threat to me or anyone else.

I'm a proud Latina (Costa Rica) who was born and raised in NYC (go Yankees). I have a Bachelor of Arts in (American) History degree and a Master of Teaching degree with plans to pursue my PhD. I received a full tuition scholarship for both my undergraduate career and my graduate career, nonetheless I still have student loans which I am paying for. I roughly pay $500.00 a month in student loans and that's with having a scholarship. So before your ignorance get's the best of you, please educate yourself before you make yourself look like an actual "spawn".

See, there is your problem. You don't consider yourself American. You, by your writing, consider yourself Costa Rican. DO you see anyone else, except the Latinos identifying themselves that way? I could start my comments with the fact that I am German, or Polish or Irish or Scottish, but I don't because I AM AMERICAN. If you are born here, you are an American of such and such descent, but YOU ARE AMERICAN. You are NOT Costa Rican, or Peruvian, or Mexican... You are AMERICAN. Those of you who don't feel that way need to leave and let your "country of origin" take care of you since you are so happy to be called by that country's designation.
I agree with you 100%. I have always lived in diverse neighborhoods and I love it. I enjoy learning about other cultures, other religions, other countries. I am learning Spanish as a courtesy to my wonderful neighbors. We should all know more than one language and we should all set the example to our closed minded friends. I have many Facebook friends from India, Peru, Brazil and other countries. They all know more than one language, they are insightful and well educated. I have no idea why so many Americans are threatened by people who are different. Embrace Diversity!

People who write such aggressive nonsense need to see a shrink! Not all illegals are Latinos. Latinos are very good immigrants. It is just that all immigrants are coming in too fast. There are no starting jobs for our resident teens and wages cannot keep up with rents. .
I don't know what planet you're living on but, in America, not all Latinos are good immigrants. In fact, most aren't immigrants at all – they are ILLEGAL ALIENS! There is a huge difference. Are you saying we should deport the Cuban's who came over here legally to escape communism? Are you saying we should deport Mexicans who came here to escape starvation? I keep hearing people say they are worried about being "taken over". The last I heard, we all human beings. After a few years of living in Miami my Cuban friends spoke English better than I could. Many times my Cuban friends were helping me with my homework and there was absolutely no difference. My present neighbors are from Puerto Rico and I am learning Spanish so that I can communicate with them in their language. They know very little English because they are elderly and so I will learn Spanish as a courtesy to them. My life has been enriched by my many diverse friends.

This is a legitimate concern. It’s been stated in the past and that’s exactly what happens. Thankfully however with one exception those groups assimilated and now contribute to new version of the country. The worry with this news group is the outright refusal to assimilate. For example.. I recently visited D.C. While walking to my destination I passed 2 local elementary schools. The signs for both were completely written in Spanish.
I am in awe of the latinos who have raised themselves out of poverty by educating themselves. I have lived in cities where I was in the minority. As a result, I have a great deal of compassion and respect for people who came here from other countries and managed to rise about all the difficulties and then make and contribution to society.
That is something really human to write because you are telling a truth.
