Pew report: Record numbers of Latinos in U.S. colleges, public schools

By Eliott C. McLaughlin, CNN

(CNN) - Latino student populations have been on an upward trajectory in the U.S. for decades, and a report released Monday says the group’s growth reached record levels last year, both in public schools and colleges.

The number of 18- to 24-year-old Latinos in college topped 2 million in 2011, accounting for 16.5% of all enrollments, according to a report by the Pew Hispanic Center. The number means Latino representation in U.S. colleges and universities is on par with the percentage of Latinos among the U.S. population, also 16.5%.

Record numbers of Latinos are also finishing college, with 112,000 earning associate degrees and 140,000 earning bachelor’s degrees. Pew states both statistics are new highs, yet Latinos still lag behind whites (1.2 million bachelor’s degrees and 553,000 associates) and blacks (165,000 bachelor’s and 114,000 associates) in degree attainment.

“Some of the growth in Hispanic college enrollments simply reflects continued growth in the nation’s Hispanic population - since 1972, the number of Hispanic 18- to 24-year-olds has grown nearly five-fold, rising from 1.3 million then to 6 million in 2011,” the report said.

However, population alone cannot explain the numbers, as eligibility to attend college also is a factor. In 2011, 76% of Latinos age 18 to 24 had completed high school, another record and a 3.5% improvement over 2010 numbers.

At the pre-kindergarten-through-12th-grade level, Latinos made up 23.9% of students in 2011, another record, according to the report from the nonpartisan Washington-based think tank.

To break the 2011 numbers down further, Latinos made up 26% of the country’s nursery school and kindergarten students, 25% of elementary school students and 21% of high school students, the report states.

The number is primed to continue increasing for the next two decades, with the U.S. Census Bureau forecasting that Latinos will make up a third of the nation’s 3- to 17-year-old children by 2036.

The numbers confirm Latinos as the largest minority group on American campuses, and they show what appears to be a growing divide between Latino students and their African-American counterparts.

Black college enrollment in 2011 was down 3% from 2010, dropping from 1.69 million to 1.64 million, while Latino enrollment was up 15%, from 1.81 million to 2.08 million. At four-year colleges, Latino enrollment jumped from 1 million in 2010 to 1.2 million in 2011, while black enrollment held steady at 1.1 million.

While the numbers are records, according to Pew, Latino students have been outpacing blacks in some student population categories for years.

In 1975, 6.94 million adults who finished high school went to college. About 309,000 were Latino and 665,000 were black. Thirty years later, the overall number jumped to 10.83 million, with 1.22 million of them Latino and 1.3 million of them African-American.

Latinos first topped African-Americans in public school enrollment in 2001. Back then, the respective numbers were 8.82 million to 8.65 million. Today, the number is 12.45 million to 8.27 million, according to Pew.

And while there’s a starkly lower dropout rate among African-American youngsters (399,000, or 9%, of all students in 2011) than Latinos (975,000, or 16.3%, of all students), Latinos have been sending more kids to college for the last two years as well.

Some other figures from the report:

  • The number of white students in college jumped 3% between 2010 and 2011, from 7.66 million to 7.88 million. Meanwhile, the Asian student population plummeted 8%, from 811,000 to 748,000, in that same time.
  • While Latinos make up 25% of the public elementary school rolls, compared to blacks, who compose 14%, the numbers are closer once kids move to high school: Latinos 21% and blacks 16%.
  • There were 2.1 million Latino students in U.S. colleges last year, a 15% increase over 2010. The number increased 24% the year before. Latino enrollment made up 74% of the growth in total enrollments last year.
  • Last year marked the first time more Latinos than blacks enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities, but they have outnumbered blacks at two-year colleges since 2010.
  • Whites still rank No. 1 in high school completion, with at least 86% for the last 20 years, but Latinos and African-Americans are both closing the gap. While 88.3% of whites completed high school in 2011, 76.3% of Latinos and 81.4% of blacks could make the same claim. In 1993, the gap was far greater among whites (86.8%), Latinos (60.9%) and blacks (74.9%).
  • Despite a student population almost triple that of Hispanics, whites had a similar number of dropouts last year: 1 million out of 17.63 million white students and 975,000 out of 5.97 million Latino students.
  • With 1.72 million degrees (68.83% of all those conferred), whites earned more than twice as many bachelor’s and associate degrees as the other three groups combined - blacks (278,749 or 11.15%), Latinos (252,527 or 10.1%) and Asians (161,443 or 6.5%) - according to 2010 statistics. Whites, of course, make up roughly 72% of the U.S. population, compared with Latinos (about 16%) blacks (about 13%) and Asians (about 5%).

The Pew Hispanic Center report was put together using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Education’s Digest of Education Statistics.

We will keep moving forward and your negative insults only gives us more modivation to keep going. We CAN'T AND WON'T STOP! SO EAT THAT!

Put them books down... you have a lawn to mow, haha. Seriously everyone just admit it. The melting pot has done nothing for our society. However the brilliant white folks who invented the automobile, airplane, advances in medicine, apple, google, microsoft, not sure who invented the wheel but i would bet it was an enterprising white guy have shaped the world we live in. If the trend continues with the hispanics and blacks over reproducing we can see where our country is headed. Is there a black or hispanic country leading the world in any area other than famine and taco production? It will be ok, Germany is a fine country in which to relocate.

I understand how so many posters can be frustrated by Hispanics/Latinos/Chicanos whatever you are who come to this country and don't speak English. Why, just this week-end, I was at this concert where there were these two Mexican singers – Placido Domingo and Ana Maria Martinez. Most of the songs they sang weren't even in English!!!! What's up with that?????

Mexicans are not "Latino" we are Mexican. You weak whites who slap that left wing label on your foreheads aren't fooling us one bit, you think you are better than us and are using us for political purposes and we know it. You are just as ignorant and stupid as those right wing racists are. You do not have us in your pocket whities. The word Mexican stands for Mestizo. Of native Americas indian (Originally from Manchuria) and spanish descent. Mixed if you will. Surely many people in the US. are of mixed race being the world's melting pot.

Already happening…. I am a 4 year bachelor graduate and LATINO from Mexican descendants. As i was walking to my car I watched 5 white workers doing construction. Now don't get me wrong I like most whites i meet but dam it felt good to see the tables turn. As i got in my car and headed to my nice job under A/C, benefits, good pay..... 🙂 Then I talked to my other Latino friend and same... he had some construction guys doing work at his house. He was thinking the same thing as he kicked up his feet and watched them work. 🙂 Ahhh what a beauty!!!!!!
      Sincerely,
      A proud Latino!

Did it ever occur to you that does White men might love their job and couldn't care less about what your opinion about them was? Do you know that construction requires people to think or they risk causing structural damage and hundreds up to billions of dollars can be lost because of a mistake? I love home renovation and carpentry (not my job but hobbies), if it were my job would it mean I was less educated or of a lower class? No.

Sounds like you got a fat head Bro. The white part of you is coming out big time. What happened to your Latino humility? Besides those white workers were probably union. If you have been around you know that a union carpenter in CA. makes three times more than one in TX. Also a union carpenter makes one and a half times what a beginning engineer with a masters does.

        August 22, 2012 at 12:45 am |
      • Nabia

More than a beginner engineer, that depends on the industry and oh so many factors. How about a geneticist? Doctor? Molecular Biologist? Those industries make a ton of money, much more than your union buds losing ground to technological advancements do. Many Latinos have entered these fields already.

I am confused when are you called Latino. A kid of an American father and a Latina mother is Latino? A kid of a Latino father and American mother is Latino? Is Mitt Romney Latino, as his father and grandfather from Mexico?

    • Hi

According to Dictionary(dot)com a Latino is a person of Latin-American or Spanish-speaking descent.

      August 21, 2012 at 5:38 pm |
      • maserati01

On the latino or latina question. The dictionary is incomplete. Latinos and latinas are Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or French. In latin languages some words are masculine and some words are feminine depending on the application. Hispanics are spanish and latin and of course the roots are from Spain.

What is called latin America is made of of all sorts of cultures which continue to grow since the original colonists from Europe settled. Also keep in mind the America's is a melting pot. From Canada to Argentina and everywhere in between. American applies to inhabitants in the continents of North Central and South America.

The natives are brown and are not latinos. Speaking spanish doesn't make one latin as does speaking english doesn't make one English. Example US. blacks speak english due to the slavery, Natives in the US. speak english in the reservations. Does this make natives english? And in Central America blacks speak spanish, in South America Portuguese, Dutch, French or spanish or english depending on the country. Please also note the creole languages of the Caribbean islands
Lastly Asia is the natives of the Americas origins which have been traced back from the time of the crossing of the baring straits by foot from such places as Manchuria thousands of years ago.

Context is everything. If you're doing something cool or liberal, you're a minority. If you're doing something bad or conservative, you're white.

      Obama: Black.
      Zimmerman: White
      Romney: White
      Going to school: Latino
Going to prison: White or not mentioned

Obama: not my favorite person, he's bi-racial.
Zimmerman: is Hispanic by his mother's roots.
Going to Collage: More Whites attend college.
Going to Jail: There are more African Americans in prison than Whites.

The US Gov, Politicians, Pro illegal immigration advocates and the Media has decided to create a new race of people that doesn't exist. It's like saying the old British colonies: US, Australia, etc..are a new race of people. It's racist, stupid and offensive. People from Latin American countries come in all races. Whatever country your mom is from, that is what she is, it could be any race. Ignore this Latino/Hispanic jibberish. I describe my family and they describe themselves(the ones that live in South America) in that manner, none of them say they they are Latino or Hispanic, they are proud of their country and heritage.

It's funny, so many comments belittling "illegals" and suggesting solutions as drastic as a Mexican holocaust. But only one poster that I read mentioned the real reason for illegal immigration – economics and American employers hiring the immigrants at low wages. If all you anti-illegal alien bashers and Mexico haters really want to make an impact on illegal immigration, then you need to demand the government embark on a concerted enforcement effort with severe penalities that targets employers. Throw a few corporate CEOs and Board Directors into prison and you'll notice a severe drop in illegal immigration. But that will never happen, because the vast majority of Americans (especially white americans) can never accept their own responsibility for the social problems of our nation. (See Drugs*)

Whites in this country are starting to feel marginalized like Native Americans did back in the 19th century. They're losing what they feel is 'their country' ...

I think that is because many whites have never accepted blacks, latinos, native americans, asians and other non-whites to be part of "their" country. Well, guess what. They are. So get used to the idea.

Not true. I think they have a tough time accepting the crime that comes along with it. It seems like America is taking in the poor an uneducated. I saw a program on Little Haiti in Florida on TV the other night. I could not believe all the Haitian gangs and the slums and poverty that followed all these people who immigrated here. It is a dangerous place. Why were they let in. Surely they knew the consequences if you you at Haiti as a country. You cannot change the spots on a leopard. If gangs move into your neighborhood and start stealing from you and killing people and trashing things. I do not think you would care where they were from, you would just want them out of there. No racism involved. Just wanting to live freely and without fear.

They voted in an accepted a black president. That tells me that people are not racist to the degree some think. I believe they would vote in a Mexican American president if they felt he was qualified and thought he would do a good job. They just want these people to become productive citizens and not mooches and criminals.

I've seen a few comments here stating that illegal immigrants can not get into college.....that is plain WRONG! I used to think that as well, that one had to prove citizenship or show a school visa or something.

Google Kennesaw University Georgia Immigration law. A KSU student was here illegally, had been educated in our elementary schools and high school and was at a public college that received funding from state/federal tax payers. When she was pulled over for a traffic violation and had no drivers license she was arrested, where it was then discovered she was illegal and deportation started. The College, the professors, and the students came out in droves to protest and keep here until she finished her education. That was until it was discovered she paid IN STATE TUITION!!! Many of the students, citizens, were paying Out of State tuition while an illegal was paying in state. Needless to say the college kids stopped supporting the illegal girl.

UCLA just started the "Dream College" where illegal immigrants can go for 30% of the normal tuition rates. Someone please tell me the fairness in all of this?

Still like paying those taxes to educate all these kids, some of whom are here illegally? I know I don't.

forgot to mention. After that incident, Georgia now passed a law that only legal state citizens can get In State Tuition.....yet illegals can still get in for Out of State costs

You mean those taxes that are taken out of the illegal wage earners check, like state, local, federal and social security. They cant claim those taxes so they never get a refund and that money stays in state, local and federal coffers, including social security, they are actually boosting social security. Are those the taxes you refer too??

Illegal alien migration into the United States costs American taxpayers $346 billion annually reported by the National Research Council. While employers of illegal aliens rake-in billions of dollars, the US citizens subsidize what may be called organized "Slavery in 21st Century America."

While Congress facilitates outsourcing, insourcing and offshoring of American jobs by the thousands weekly, that same Congress imports 182,000 legal immigrant monthly who need jobs. Another estimated 100,000 illegal aliens arrive each month without jobs. All those immigrants seize jobs from American citizens at slave wages.

What happens to the American taxpayer?

"Immigrants are poorer, pay less tax, and are more likely to receive public benefits than American citizens," said Edwin Rubenstein, reporting on the National Research Council's new book: "The New Americans: Economic, Demographics and Fiscal Effects of Immigration." The Social Contract Winter 2007-08. http://www.thesoicalcontract.com

The NRC found that the average immigrant household receives $13,326 in federal welfare and pays $10,664.00 in federal taxes. Thus, American taxpayers shell out $2,682.00 for each immigrant household.

In addition, the report showed that immigrants affect 15 different executive agencies of the U.S. government.

Earned Income Tax Credit-fraud is rampant and IRS does little to verify existence of children. Clean Air and Climate Change-these goals are unattainable as long as US population grows-driven by unending immigration. Emergency medical treatment-US taxpayer money provides $250 million a year to help hospitals defray costs for illegal aliens. Bureau of Land Management-the Interior Department spends $1 million to mitigate environmental damage done by illegals crossing US southern border. Migrant educational grants-intended to help states educate children of illegal workers. More fraud from over-counting. Office of Foreign Labor Certification-immigrant workers depress wages for US citizens resulting in declines in federal revenues at $100 billion annually.

As shown on CBS with Katie Couric this past week, 300,000 pregnant Mexican women cross the border to birth their babies, known as 'anchor babies', in American hospitals at an average cost of $6,000.00 per birth with no complications. If the child suffers heart defects, Downs Syndrome, Autism or any other problems, the costs jump to $500,000.00 with long term care into the millions of dollars. All footed by the America taxpayer!

Not mentioned in Couric's report, that child enjoys free breakfasts and lunches through 13 years of publicly funded education at an average cost of $7,000.00 per year. Additionally, American taxpayers foot the bill for all medical and housing assistance for the child and mother. More hidden costs add up with ESL classes to teach the child English. Connecticut alone suffers 120 languages in their schools while Colorado suffers over 40 foreign languages that cripple their classrooms.

The list of expenses paid for by American taxpayer soars with time and numbers of illegal aliens. Additionally, legal immigrants sponsor their relatives in chain migration and family reunification at US taxpayer expense.

These immigrants take American jobs while they burn American taxpayer funds for immigrant welfare. This all happens while the US national debt approaches $10 trillion. Immigrants flood into this country while jobs cascade out to China where we owe $1 trillion in T-bills as of 2008. Additionally, we suffer a $700 billion annual trade deficit.

Once those illegal aliens hit this country, half of them work off the books and do not pay $401 billion dollars annually according to the 2005 Bear Stearns Report. Additionally, they form the second largest underground economy in the world. Both legal and illegal immigrants send $80 billion back to their home countries in cash transfers on untaxed money.

When does it end? Not any time soon! Who pays? You do! Like the proverbial golden calf, the United States taxpayer bleeds to death daily while our president and Congress fiddle, faddle and scratch their generous rear ends while they facilitate the death of America's middle class.

Our politicians create the problems they campaign to solve; but once in office, as John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have proven with their time in the U.S. Senate-they work more against Americans than for them. The proof in the aforementioned report is, as they say, "in the pudding!"

Well isn't everything a problem with you. If people come here illegally it's a problem, if legal US citizens sponsor their families it's still a problem.

There are people who are so over the top pro illegal immigration, they won't bother to read or understand what you wrote. They will just say you are racist, that seems to be the common response from lazy nonthinking types. For the majority of Americans this is the root of the conflict along with not assimilating into American culture.

I live in Mexico. When the people from Mexico come to the USA their work ethic changes for the better. I know because it is hard to get anyone to come to work or finish a job here in Mexico. I would say 80% of the time. From lawyers to construction workers. You literally have to try and chase them down. Most things here are done half assed here in Mexico. They do not take as much pride in their work. From Mechanics to constuction workers to attorneys and up the chain. Because of codes, and people demanding better quality in the USA the people Mexican people have had to change so they could survive here. They have had to improve there work ethics and quality.

Many people do not send there kids to school here in Mexico, but work at an early age. It is an excuse because the Mennonite children work extremely hard all day and are self schooled in the night. They are extremely intelligent children and will turn out as productive as their parents. I drove to Namiquipa here in Mexico the other day. My Mexican wife was amazed at how clean and perfect the Mennonite community was. It looked even more organized then communities in the USA. The crops were groomed and they was not a piece of trash on the side of any road. Everybody was out working. I asked her why the Mexican people were not more like the Mennonites. She said I do not know. I told her if I did not know I was in Mexico I would have thought I was in the USA.

There are good people in Mexico, but the problem is there are way too many bad. It is because of the culture has caused it. That is why the people are fortress-ed into their houses like prisons. The problem is with all the illegal people coming in, they are the poorer and more likely to commit crimes. Doing so as the cross the border. America has to pay a big price for these successful illegal Latinos as well as the poor. Because many are using the system. Hopefully the majority are Latino Americans and are using the system and paying just like all other Americans. Koodo's for those that have helped to make the Latino American community better. Would be interesting to know how many of those were illegal and used American taxpayers money to get their education. A lot off topic, but so is a lot of things posted here.

Whatever your feelings toward latinos, immigrants and natives, illegal and legal immigrants, get over it. The Hispanic population in the U.S. is going to keep growing so you may as well learn to live with it or leave.

They should leave, not us!! We are so frustrated with them, writing our feelings is the only way we have to express that frustration. Hopefully, we will have a president that will take action to get rid of them, instead of welcoming them with open arms and our hard earned money (our taxes).

Latinos are way smarter than you. You did not comprehend the article. Latinos make up 16% of the population blacks 13%. Statistically, there should be more latinos in college than blacks. Also, according to the article blacks obtained more associates and bachelors than latinos, in addition to having higher high school graduation rates. The article stated noting about intelligence.

Your comment is a sad reflection of your education. You might want to hire a tutor. Your comprehension skills are that of a elementary student. These articles are written for people with basic intelligence, which is something you lack.

Santa Gertrudis is a small, peaceful, countryside town located about 20 miles from San Buenaventura. The town features nicely built homes, paved roads, celebration events in November, January, and December, with recreational activities such as hiking, camping or you can take a swim in the lake in winter, no worries, the water is warm in winter and cool in summer. Go and enjoy a high quality lifestyle, because California seems like a mess.

Those "poor" kids have the name brand stuff, while my son gets cheap stuff so I can make ends meet. It really isn't fair to us the middle class who work so hard for everything we have, while they drive around in nice cars they get with Welfare money.

    • Fedup

Right on Dave! My sister-inlaw is Latino and an American but because she is Latino her whole college education starting with a BA to and almost completed PHD, was given to her without paying a penny. Now this is not because of high GPA scores. The average middle class Americans do not get any breaks unless you want to call "student loans" a break. I love my country but I wish just once would give a break to non minority college students. Guess what, since we have 1% of the population very wealthly that leaves the rest of us stuggling to keep up with the very basics in life never mind a college education. Wonder why most Americans don't believe or trust in Politicians? All they think of day and night is to get votes.

Did you also know that the minorities complained a few years back that the SAT test was too hard for them and they couldn't get into college. The United States lowered the scores for them for the SAT, to become a Fireman and a Police officers. Seems like the minorities want what the whites have, but don't want to work for it!

Everytime I see a posh car, it's owned by a white person. What are you people complaining about? I guess you will only be happy if every minority worked a the farm for less than minimum wage! Oh the ignorant, racist banter on here. This is extremelly simplified, but Latinos are a mix of various Spanish and native cultures – both of which have history in the USA that seriously predates any white-eye posting on this board. Also, not evey Latino is Mexican, not every Mexican (American) or Latino is illegal. Heck, Puerto Rico is part of US. I have a Mexican American pal whose great grandparents immigrated here about the same time as my Finnish ones did. This same friend put himself through university by working at it as a janitor for 11 years and now teaches in the poorest school district in the nation. I also know Latinos in northern New Mexico whose families ties to that area go back hundreds of years – well before a single Pilgrim set foot here. The oldest homes, cities and churches in the US are not on the east coast, they are in the Southwest and built by Natives, Spanish and Latinos.

    August 21, 2012 at 11:41 am |
    • Meep

There is enough racism and ignorance to go around. The article above treats Latino as a race, it is not. Grouping different races from nearly 30 countries to create a supergroup then treating them as a race is racist offensive. Mexico like all Latin America countries are ex European colonies just like the US. This "they were here longer than the Pilgrims" is ridiculous. Up and down the Americas there are indigenous groups that still exist today who struggle for power within the ex European colony they live in. It's tiresome when cowards in Latin American countries use them for their anti-American rhetoric when they do NOTHING to help them in their own countries.

I attended a public school 1-8th grade in a mixed neighborhood in NY before switching to private school. I actually liked having 30% Latinos in my classes; it was GREAT for the curve! Their grades were so low, even the ones born here, that the rest of us became instant stellar students. They'd fail even the most basic tests, thus a grading curve was introduced so more would pass.

I can relate. That's the way it is with Muslims in public schools in Dearborn. They're so dumb that they turn their houses into third world shacks by not keeping them up...I'm not kidding...one family was so dumb, tthat hey tried to change the light bulbs and broke every single one in the house by turning them the wrong way. Then, they just sat there in the dark, not understanding why the lights didn't work; and then, they didn't understand what the lint trap in the dryer is for, so they threw it away because it was full of lint. After that, they couldn't figure out why there was lint flying everywhere when they tried to dry clothes.

Don't even mention schooling. If it weren't for social promotions, our first grade classes would be packed with Muzzies up to 18, still trying to get through the alphabet.

Hola Tacoman no that is not what I am saying. My husband is from Mexico, and came here doing the jobs that Americans did not want to do. When there was no work, he went back home. He did not have children here, bring any of his relatives here, never received a penny of assistance. He worked hard and eventually received his papers. It was later that I met him where I work, and I had never met anyone in my life with such a strong work ethic. He came here to the U.S. just like my grandparents from Norway, Germany. Learned the language, worked hard, supported himself, never received a handout from anybody. Where I work now, there is such abuse of our welfare system, it is sickening. Thanks for being correct and living the American dream the way it was intended to be lived.

And if I'm correct even if a person gets their papers or visa to be here two or ten years they have to sigh that if America goes to war with the country that they are from that they will fight for America.I believe that a person from another country should study and pass the citizenship to become American or U.S.A. citizen.I am very proud to say that my children and their children speak a few languages. Two of my daughter's are interperter's and my 10 year old grandaughter has been bilangual since 14 months of age and she interperts for the dentist. It does help the girls support themselves and they are white americans but they also teach other's how to speak spanish.

You're outraged at the comments? The comments come from US citizens outraged at watching uncontrolled immigration into their nation and its tragic effect on our education system. A couple of degrees couldn't help you spot that correlation? Or is it that your loyalty lies elsewhere?

Tragic effect on education?...So, Latinos going to colleges / universities is having a tragic effect on education?...and I am talking about legal Latinos, because the illegal immigrants do not have the opportunity to further their education. How are Latinos attending colleges/universities any different from whites/blacks/asians that are attending colleges, receiving financial aid?....It is not that my loyalty lies anywhere else...I am a Mexican American, born in Mexico...Yes my loyalty lies with the US, but I am also Mexican and feel that people like you are stereotype all Mexicans as being the same and blame us for all the problems in the US, that is why I am outraged.

Of course you're right; not all Latinos are illegal. But you can't deny that the rapid increase in Hispanic students is fueled by illegal immigration. Enough already, this has to stop.
I like hispanic people, and enjoy being part of the culture; but I don't like the hordes of immigrants crossing our border.
I like Mexico, was glad when the won the soccer gold; but I can't see the US absorbing all the people who want to live here instead of there. I would feel the same if the majority of illegals were from Britain.

What would you do for your family if you were in that situation?....no food, no clothes to wear... would you stay and watch your kids starve, or would you go somewhere where you can give them a better life?

In reply to Tacoman. There are successful people here in Mexico. Look at the Mennonites of German blood. They are getting rich here and are exemplary and honest people. How come they can do it in Mexico, but the other Mexican people are having a problem. The biggest reason they come to the USA is because of all the handouts. Many are still complaining in the USA and they have a hard time making it. The culture they were born in has molded them to fail as adults. Why are there so many Mexican gangs. It is because there parents do not pass down a legacy or path to do so. They do not know how to guide their children to succeed. They have brought these principles from Mexico. Again their are exceptions to the rules. We have a black president and it looks as if the black Americans are faring worse then the Mexican Americans. Many black gangs also. Look to Africa and you will see a culture that is poor and not productive just as in Mexico as far as Education goes. It has got to be cultural or not one black or Mexican could be successful. We know that is not the truth. Because I have an education and know how to make money I came to Mexico and am doing quite well. There are so many opportunities here, but not enough educated people to take advantage of the opportunities that abound. You do not have to come to the USA to live well.

I don't think people would illegally cross the border unless they could see it is worth it. It seems from what you said, with the starving kids and no clothes, is that Mexico is a land with zero opportunity and horrible living conditions. It seems the real problem is that Mexico is a horrible place to live for a lot of people, and for whatever reason, is not getting better any time soon. What are your thoughts on this? Is Mexico really so bad of a place? And why isn't it getting better? Is it just the drug lords, bad economy, a cultural thing? I'm not from Mexico and I've only visited a few times (Mexicali, Tijuana, La Paz) so I really don't know all of the issues going on there.

Did anyone go to CNN Mexico tab and click on this story? There was a comment from Edgar Guzman Gomez that stated: " Mexico recupera paso a paso lo que le fue robado". IN ENGLISH: " MEXICO RECOVERS STEP BY STEP WHAT WAS STOLEN". This is the mentality of these people that our government thinks are just trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. LIE, LIE, LIE..... They blame the United States for everything that the previous presidents of Mexico did to their own people and country. Time to think long and hard American people about what you want our country to become!!!!

What do you expect from uneducated low class people who don't know their own history? Mexico was just another European colony. The Spanish, THEIR ancestors, were the original invaders who stole land from their other ancestors. They should hate themselves not the US. These fools think Spanish and Catholicism are Native, they are not The fact is there are real indigenous groups struggling and fighting in Latin American countries for power. You really think these hateful people commenting lift a finger to help them? No, they act like they are the victims to push their anti American agenda only.

There are people in Mexico that are no different than people in the United States. They hate all things American as many here hate all things Mexican. People here want to reclaim the land and people there want to reclaim the land, neither will happen. I remember in the old days when any Mexican that migrated and remained in the U.S. was considered a traitor in Mexico. Illegals have been around forever, whether they are Mexican, Asian, and European or from countless other countries and nationalities. The only reason there are illegals coming is because our government provides the incentives. There are countless non profit groups that educate illegal immigrants on obtaining benefits this includes health care providers. These groups are founded by federal and state grants designed to provide these services. We are our own worst enemy. But what can we expect from uneducated lower class people chasing their tails.

This has got to be fixed and mass deportation of illegals is the way to fix it. I don't understand why those in power have failed the American Citizen by not taking broad and aggressive action to rid the United States of non citizens to assure that the sanctity of the American Citizen is preserved. We need to assure that illegal aliens are off our land, off our roads, out of our schools, and out of our pockets. Obama's back door amnesty must be stopped and immediate mass deportation effected. EVerify and RealID must be implemented to assure the inability of illegals to work or to secure social services is effected.

I called CNN and requested that they follow up on Tuesday news article stating that there is now 2.08 million Hispanics enrolled in American colleges and report how many of these 2.08 million are PAYING THEIR OWN WAY AND HOW MUCH IS OUR TAX DOLLARS COVERING–Talking tuition, room & board, books Etc. You and I know CNN will not do it.

Chris, this is Jamie Gumbrecht with CNN.com. I did not receive your message, but wanted to respond to your comment. I doubt we could get specific financial aid figures for the group of students researched in this Pew Hispanic Center report, as the center's research dealt with questions about enrollment, not questions about how people pay for school. The National Center for Education Statistics' most recent data about racial and ethnic breakdowns of financial aid are from 2007-2008 - it says 92% of full-time, full-year black undergraduate students received financial aid, 85% of Hispanic students, 77% of white students, 68% of Asian students, 80% of Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander students and 83% of students or two or more races. In this case, financial aid includes grants (which could include need-based grants, merit-only scholarships, tuition waivers and employer tuition reimbursements etc.) and loans, which can be through the government or through private lenders.

Have you ever bothered to study the sociology of the immigrant experience, Fortress? If you had, you might find it interesting that those on the bottom rung of the socio-economic ladder generally take issue with the most recent group to arrive in this country. Look back through American history, and you will find this pattern repeating, with the Irish being the first group discriminated against, followed by the Italians, and now the "Hispanics". Those who have succeeded in the United States don't take issue with those who are coming here following the same dream. Throughout this country, hard-working Hispanics are doing the work no "American" would perform. You might read a recent article in the New York Times this week about the dearth of available labor on farms in California and the adverse impact on farmers there. Try and educate yourself a little; you will find people are generally more open to discussion if you deal in facts, not fear-mongering.

My father was in public school in the 1930's, and there were not formal ESL classes. Instead, individual teachers had to work with the many (more than half of his class, including him) students who had English as their second language. My dad did not speak a bit of English until he went to public school.

Why do you guys think the situation is any different than it was before? A lot more money and resources were wasted by not formalizing ESL programs.

On the other hand, I am for English being the official language of the US, and the government or nonprofit agencies offering ANYONE who doesn't know English interpreters for government paper. However, that should exclude driver's licenses as knowing English is necessary to drive on our roads.

It used to be a sign of low-class to speak your native language in front of others who didn't know it, but frankly a lot of upper-class folks from Europe do it all the time in my town, so what do you expect newcomers to do? It is unbelievably insulting for people to start yakking in French, when clearly they know English, to each other in public. And news to them, I know French (as many know Spanish, white or not) so they aren't hiding anything.

(Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son) I wouldn't consider talking in one's native language in the presence of others who didn't know the language as low class. When I visited my relatives in Mexico with my siblings I always use to talk to my siblings in English and people over there had absolutely no problem with it. I speak Spanish to my parents in public here in the United States of America, not because they don't know English, but because that is how we chose to communicate.

Well this report doesn’t mention how this affects our local tax bases. Immigrations has been an issue since the time of the romans. Those people where smart enough back then to know your population must stay within its limits of generating tax revenue. So for years they would push nomadic people from their lands. Here we are some 2500 years later and the people in Washington are too stupid to see that. OUR country is current in debt for 15,874,365,457,260. Do you think maybe we should be reviewing why OUR government can’t seem to enforce our current immigration laws? Do you think maybe we start voting out the people who feel we shouldn’t upset the illegal immigrants? And do you think an explosion in our population is going to help your college educated kids find a job that pays more than 45K a year?

This is your country, it’s OUR government and it’s OUR immigrations laws. We the People will define OUR standard of living for OUR nation. If OUR government doesn’t want to do its job, then fire the people who hold office.

      Mike:
Finally someone who knows what they are talking about! My husband is from Mexico, I am from the U.S. He came here in the 1980's doing the work that Americans did not want to do. When there was no work for him, he went back to Mexico and waited until he was called to come back to work. He did not marry, and have a hundred children. He did not receive 1 penny of help from our government. He did not pull and tug on any government programs for help. I now work in a factory as a translator, where unemployment here in the US is out of control, and yet, I watch everyday as more and more illegal people are hired to work here. We have health insurance offered, none of them take it because they can get free assistance from our government, while me and my family have to pay for ours. They all drive brand new vehicles because the have rent assistance, food stamps, free health care and anything else they need, FREE. I for one am tired of paying for all of these services to people that should never have received them to begin with. My husband feels the same, in fact, he is outraged that nothing is being done to stop this invasion of illegal people. Everyday he feels like it is a slap in the face. All of us need to be responsible and make our voices heard this election year and vote out all the people that are forcing us (Americans) to pay for these people. I am so worried about what kind of lives my Grandchildren will have if we do not change the path we are on at this moment. My Dad is a Korean war veteran and he is so disgusted with the way our country is going that he does not even want to vote. How sad is that?

Did you know illegals cannot get public assistance like welfare or food stamps because they have no valid social security numbers? Plus, who is talking about illegals here? This article addresses LATINOS, not all Latinos are here illegally.

        August 21, 2012 at 11:17 am |
      • zaaquir

@outraged.........Your statement is not true. How do I know? Well, I worked for DFCS for years up until recently. They don't need a SS# to obtain Welfare, Food Stamps, Medicaid, Housing Asst., etc. Matter of fact, want you go to your local DFCS office around the middle of the month and see how many Hispanics are in their applying and renewing for benefits. They come in the middle of the month because they don't want to be seen by the whites and blacks that come in on the first and last of the month. I guess they want American Citizens to believe as you want AC to believe and that is that they(Hispanics) are not a burden on the system. However, I can tell you for sure that they are.

@ Almadeliaundelay, if you work for a company that pays it’s employees so little that they could qualify for services such as food stamps, welfare and medi-cal and “anything else” then your company is part of the problem. But the BIGGER issue is that you say that illegals are being hired at this company in which you are a translator. Why have you not reported your company’s illegal practices? Is your husband outraged that you are knowingly allowing the continued employment and hiring of illegal workers? You are part of the problem not the solution. Don’t sit and sulk in silence, speak up and make a change.
@zaaquir, not sure what part of the country you’re from but in California an illegal without a valid social security card cannot receive benefits such as food stamps (EBT), welfare (Cash EBT), Medicaid, medi-cal, or subsidized housing. But then there are those that will educate people on ways around the system. I’ve been to the HHS offices.

Most non-zenophobic americans don't mind Mexicans coming to america.
    What IS a massive problem though and one which promises to wreck havoc on our economy is;
The fact that most of these 15 million or more are not contributing to the tax base, but are using the services which americans pay taxes to maintain.
This will have, and most assuredly is already having a detrimental affect on our infrastructure as well as economy.

I've heard some say they pay tax in the form of sales tax. That does not hold water because I've read in more than one soource that the lions share of what illegals make is sent back to mexico and they live very sparcely here....spending very very little of their earnings.

I'm happy to welcome new citizens, not happy to see free-loaders.

They are free-loaders getting free lunches, free medical, free education, free SAT/ACT testing, free college applications and of course free college education because of the scholarships that are only for Latinos and exclude/racially discriminate against white students

Also Latinos go to school because they understand why is not to have an education and they know what means to be hungry thats why they go to college at all costs thats the big diffrence between whites and Latinos sociallly speaking

The money spent on educating and food and health care of illegal Latino's is directly violating black Americans. If their numbers are down we need to as a country pull them up. They fought wars and died for the right to be Americans and we are letting illegal Latinos baby boom and take money and college seats away from Americans. The weakest link is were we should focus our attention. I mean no disrespect to black Americans I am simply stating that the people most in need should be pulled up. The country is only as strong as its weakest link.

    August 21, 2012 at 6:10 am |
    • OrlandoMom

Black Americans need to stop their teens from having babies and they would instantly be pulled out of poverty which would be a huge benefit to our country. It is a waste of a life to be a teen mom on welfare when they could be in college learning a valuable career. I am a conservative but I believe that there should be free birth control for poor people. Not rich Law Students at the most expensive Universities in the country (George Washington/Georgetown) but ending teen/out of wedlock pregnancy would end WIC, Food Stamps, Medicaid and more for young people and enable them to pursue a real American Dream of prosperity, civility and happiness.

Will have to agree with that orlando but in some cases thats what minorities teens know to have kids at an early age and live from welfare as these has been the modus vivendi of generations.

The fastest route to poverty is babies. Teens having babies guarantees poverty and a cycle for future generations, as well. However, even more troubling for the country ought be that the fastest growing unwed teen mothers are also the fastest growing high school dropouts: hispanic girls. Given the number of babies they have, the U.S. is staring down the barrel of a population-poverty gun. Given that 48% of the U.S. population pays all the federal income taxes that funds welfare, expect the class warfare to increase. Given that homeowners pay property taxes that fund local and state public schools and law enforcement and most social services (welfare) not picked up by the federal govt., those paying for all the endless crop of illegitimate litters of babies.

I disagree with your stating that Black teens need to stop having babies and the usual rhetoric you racist scream about Black people. What do they have to look forward to, a failing American educational system. What is America's rank in the world as far as education with other industrialized nations? Ad for having babies, I see girls of all races having babies, not so much white because abortion is more accessible for them. As for Latinos and education, more power to them, they have a right to education like everybody else. I can't see someone without citizenship getting into a college unless they have the legal proof that they are a citizen or have a visa. As for Latinos taking over America, that will never happen. I think eventually the so-called minority population will be the majority population, but I don't see any one group being in charge in the near future. America is changing, its going to be multicultural and nothing is going to stop that as long as the birth rate of each ethnic group stays the same.

@OrlandoMom the number of teen births among blacks and latinos have declined more than that of whites over the last 12 years. According to the CDC in 2000 33/1000 white teenage girls gave birth compared to 79/1000 for blacks, 87/100 for latinos 21/1000, for asians and 58/1000 for native americans. In 2010 the numbers were 24/1000 for whites, 52/1000 for blacks, 56/1000 for latinos, 11/1000 for asians, and 39/1000 for native Americans.

I am black, and the way I see Obama groveling for the Latino votes, makes me wish their was another option. Romney is not it, he no more wants to see the value of blacks, any further than minimum wage jobs. America as a whole has been minimizing blacks throughout history. Now we are an issue to be discussed. Now our vote is needed. The illegal latinos every one despises now is the same one everyone was flaunting in blacks faces a few years ago. We dealt with how they were the nannies to hire because they were cheap and oh yeah, they taught your brats spanish. They cooked, cleaned and deferred to you as is you were their saviors. Now that they want better wages, health insurance, and not show such deference, now their is a problem, (gardeners, construction, handymen, garbage collectors, street workers.....remember when blacks and whites had these jobs). Blacks have been demon ized by this society. Welfare someone spoke to the issue of welfare.....sts....all people receive welfare in some manner, regardless of the race. Hmongs get their stipen because of war debts we pay, illegals get thiers by stealing people identiities....get jobs that way too....but hey here in California they don't have to do that....just say Hi, I am an illegal and work for pennies. Amercians are being shamed and forced into working for depressed wages. The main ones hollering about blacks and others not taking the jobs because they do not want to work, are tlhe same ones who wouldn't work for that pay. America is full of hypocrites. Black Americans should be up in arms about illegals for several reason; ecomony sucks, no jobs...and oh yeah, funny how this country has so many contradiction. Cubans illegals = wet foot dry foot, mexicans illegals = bad economics in their sorry country, so come here and tear ours down.
Asian illegals = amercians think they are so smart – great at espionage , separtist.....etc.Haitian illegls = get sent back to their country quick fast and in a hurry even after major disaster. Every one keeps talking about the benefit of these illegals, and as soon as someone says something contrary, your a bigot. What about the benefit of uplifting All American equally...we haven't even got that part right. We gave Mexico nafta because they needed help, now we are giving them our country. And Obama wants to get their votes and give them a pass. This is clearly not right, If Americans dont do something about it now we will end up paying for our own destruction. By not enforcing the boarder and not kicking out illegals we take away seats for Americans. There needs to be a no vacancy sign on all American boarders. Since they gave the OK for treasonous, Unamerican, traders to ship our work overseas. So that they can get our work done for pennies on the dollar We just can not afford to have our boarders opened to any South American who wants in. And with black Americans struggling we need to help them raise there numbers. Our money should go to Americans black, white, red, yellow all Americans. NOT LATINO INVADERS WHO JUMPED THE LINE TO THE FRONT AHEAD OF THE PEOPLE WHO DO IT LEGALLY.

Tariff China. They are screwing the US, Europe, free Asia, South America and the developing world out of jobs with the 1/6 pegged currency trick. Everything they do is automatically 6 times cheaper and it's complete BS. There is a simple solution to their, I won't even call it protectionism, it's more like flat out economic warfare.

Tariff China period. Write your congressman, hold a sign on the street. Let's do this. Show them who's boss, the people who made the Internet, not the people who made lead toys.

Not cool. They are not animals– they have the right to live just like you do. Heck– these kids who graduate college are smart and have a lot to contribute. What we need is a better way for people to come here legally. Everyone contributes to the tax question– everyone IS American once they are legal. Otherwise– no benefits of an American citizen. But of course, our current administration is all about following laws *not*. That's the real problem.

Hispanics have the highest drop out ratio among both Black and White student's not mention in this article. In reality these numbers the "Pew Center" throws around don't add up. Is this a random sample survey? What is the margin of error regarding your statistics?

Oh well, the U.S. never did anything about preventing illegals from attending school in the first. School districts were forced to start classes and hire teachers for English as a second language on the property tax payers' dime. Find it hilarious that I had to show a birth certificate back in the 80s in order to attend school yet illegal kids just got a pass to attend public schools. All this PC nonsense has gotten the U.S. nowhere. Don't get me started on the "no driver's license" car insurance which companies are peddling towards illegal aliens now.

Since we keep hearing about how the US is falling behind in average student performance, I want to see standardized test performance by ethnicity and by generational welfare status.... Because I guarantee if we had not allowed all these people in the country or subsidized dumb people breeding programs our students would be much smarter on average. Face it, intelligence has been proven to be genetic and it is ludicrous and ruinously wasteful to base policy and spending on the fallacy that it isn't.

So true, my oldest daughter was valedictorian of her class in high school and college, my middle daughter won a graphic arts scholarship at SCAD by presenting her portfolio at a national symposium, my youngest has a 3.85 GPA (she doesn't even study, says school in Evans, GA is boring her out of her mind), I closed out of my last extended-studies program in architectural CAD design & project management with a 4.00 GPA and my father went to New York in 1952 with a 9th grade education and returned to Puerto Rico in 1980 with half a million dollars in underwritten municipal project bonds. I can't say I'm proud to be of 100% Puerto Rican descent, because I had no say in the matter, but, I sure feel lucky. Yes, I guess genetics do matter.

Reagan legalized amnesty in the 1980s.

However, the practice of American businesses welcoming illegals from across the border and the federal government doing nothing about it began in the 1950s, under Eisenhower, as a means to tamp down the wages of American citizens. It worked.

Hey, the number in the article does not add up. " Whites, of course, make up roughly 72% of the U.S. population, compared with Latinos (about 16%) blacks (about 13%) and Asians (about 5%)."
    That's about 106%, which is > 100%
Do they have a 6% margin of error?

    August 20, 2012 at 11:43 pm |

The 72% white figure includes white Hispanics. The Non-Hispanic White population is only around 63%. Throw in a few percent for mixed-race individuals and you get 100% total.

I have news for many of you: California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, etc were all Mexican BEFORE they became part of the U.S. Latinos were here first! Most Latino families work extremely hard to support their families and make a better life for the next generation. They PAY their taxes just like ethnically European Americans do! Ethnically European Americans are far, far more likely to collect welfare, financial aid, etc. Why do you fear and hate fellow American's education and success?

Further, there was little doubt that the vast majority were illegal as could not speak any English. A news report to that part of the city said that crime, mainly theft, is up over 200%. How does a Latino look like? My great grandmother was extremely pale, had black wavy hair, and had hazel colored eyes and she was a Latina. My father was born with golden blond hair, a white complexion and is average height, he is a Latino. My aunts, who are my father's sisters, were born with red hair and a light skin complexion, they are Latinas. My mother was born with light complected skin and curly hair, she's a Latina. My grandfather was born white complected, he's a Latino. I have relatives with grey eyes too and they are Latinos. I myself was born with a white complexion, blushed cheeks, and wavy black hair. My sister is brunette with golden blond locks of hair too. I have relatives who have Native American features, have brown skin, who are short and tall. So sorry, but I don't know how a Latino "looks."

I live in a predominantly Hispanic/ Latino neighborhood, I don't see dogs or cats in the streets. And the "La Raza" stuff is further than the truth. Truth be told many Hispanics/ Latinos can't stand each other's culture. I don't like how Puerto Ricans and Colombians speak. I don't believe in voting only for one's race and ethnicity when there is a other candidate who is better able for office. There is no "La Raza."

That is a statement very difficult to contradict, but on the other hand, those countries have been able to coexist with the superpowers and to provide them with millions of tons of materials of all kinds. Those countries represent excellent markets for our chips and sodas. Many USA nationals have become super-rich by riding on the backs of those third-world countries. Now that we have millions of those kide seeking an education ;et'sprovide them with one, after all they are American citizens. Trying to cheat them out of an appropriate education is not proper as that attempts to their most basic human rights

If every state was honest it has and still is adding up to a lot of dollars that go unexplained to the people of usa.As for myself I gladly buy school supplies and take them to schools because we have all races of students that need help but I sure do not put it on a board at the schools and say you owe me this for providing you with supplies. All i hope is that each child does the best that they can.Have you ever heard don't blame the child?

I'm glad our schools are fully funded and educating our citizens to world class standards so that our schools can continue to accept the onslaught of foreign nationals that don't speak English. It would be foolish to put more non-English speaking foreign nationals into schools that are failing our children.

    August 20, 2012 at 8:31 pm |

Don't worry so much about speaking English...in due time most kids learn the language to a very acceptable level. You are putting blame on the wrong person he probably thought he was being nice. One of my parents is from South America, I lived there and wouldn't dream of speaking English and refusing to learn Spanish when i was there. It would have been rude and excluded the people around me.

It was just an example, and it's not an isolated event, It happens a lot. Whatever, I'm not bitter about it and just accept the fact that there will be people who judge me based on stereotypes. Oh well.

White people are called racist if they don't speak Spanish, now when they do they are still getting accused. It's like they can't win. I live in Ca people speak Spanish to me all the time. I only answer them in English, because they need to learn English. I love my heritage and love Spanish so I'm not insulted BUT I think the Latin American community shares the majority of the blame for why we are all viewed a certain way. The majority of whites are trying to figure out how to deal with a group that is resisting to assimilate into American culture.

That's a result of the ridiculous government policies that hinder some folks to move forward. It has nothing to do with race. Actually, you echo notions of pseudo-scientists who for generations argued that blacks were intellectually inferior to whites. Be careful with your implications.

@P-ninny re-read the article. Blacks graduate at a higher rate at the high school and college levels. This article is not about race it is about how a group of people are getting a hire education. Be proud that Latinos are going to college. There is no need to compare races. Also, there is a such thing as BLACK latinos 🙂

"there’s a starkly lower dropout rate among African-American youngsters (399,000, or 9%, of all students in 2011) than Latinos (975,000, or 16.3%, of all students)"

"Record numbers of Latinos are also finishing college, with 112,000 earning associate degrees and 140,000 earning bachelor’s degrees. Pew states both statistics are new highs, yet Latinos still lag behind whites (1.2 million bachelor’s degrees and 553,000 associates) and blacks (165,000 bachelor’s and 114,000 associates) in degree attainment."

"If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated,it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. So faith, hope, love remain, these three;h but the greatest of these is love." Corinthians chapert 13

you do know that pres. Regan signed the largest amnesty bill for illegal immigrants in american history right? or does that not fit the story in your head...
i will admit that i want the border closed and im hispanic, every culture has its lazy people (ever notice that the largest recipients of welfare are white and from the south?) but that doesn't mean that they all are like that. did you already forget the law that was passed in Georgia that kicked out all the mexican farm workers? the politicians figured that white people would fill the jobs, did that happen? NOPE! then they had to back track and admit they made a mistake. so are white people lazy for not doing the jobs that put food on your table? in 30 years, people wont be able to tell who comes from hispanic descent, my 7 month old nephew is half "mexican" and half irish... light skin and blue eyes... hes the future. i myself am very light skinned and no one knows im hispanic until they see my full name. its a generational thing, most people under 40 dont care about any of this... its mostly the old people who are on their way out anyways.

I agree. I have taught for many years and just retired at the end of last year. Now I can say that our school was 90% Hispanic and over half of them were illegal. We were not allowed to question anything pertaining to that issue, although many, many of their birth certificates were from Mexico and they would just show up, speaking no English at all to enroll their children in school. We had to hire more bilingual interpreters each year. So much energy and resources was diverted to teach them English and then catch them up academically, that the anglo kids had to just fend for themselves. Sad.

they are paying taxes. they pay sales taxes. if they rent, they help pay for the property taxes. and chances are, if they have a job at a restuarant that's not so mom and pop and are getting a pay check they are having income taxes taken out of it. get a clue. and they wouldn't be coming over here if there wasn't a demand for it. why don't you stop hating on them and hate on the employers, or like you probably like to call them, the "job creators". they are the ones hiring illegals and giving them the ability to live here.

Not all hispanics are illegals. But you would be naive to think that a significant portion of these numbers do not include illegal immigrants. The fact that our government is compelled to educate these people using our tax revenues means that there is less education dollars being spent per student. Meaning that dollars are being diverted from students that belong to families of taxpaying americans to students who are from families that are not contributing to tax revenues. In other words, it is forced charity.

      August 20, 2012 at 4:43 pm |

@confused: Are you white? If so that answers your question. Not all, but most white folks are oblivious to race/racial issues because they're the majority. If you are a person of color, you become well aware that race and racism are critical issues that impact your life on a daily basis. People of color know when they are the only brown face in a crowd, people of color know when they're made to be authentic insiders of their cultures for others to "oooh and ahh" at the exoticism. So please, think before asking a question like "Why does CNN seem to only focus on race?" Simple: It's an issue for many people in this country, whether you are one of them or not.

If you are born here, you are an American of such and such descent, but YOU ARE AMERICAN. You are NOT Costa Rican, or Peruvian, or Mexican... You are AMERICAN. Very proud of latino students. However good we are doing, we can do better. I'm so pumped up about this article! We are going to vote out of office all of the politicians that made laws against us.

Dr. Luis I would like to say that yes I'm proud of the Latino's as well as every race or creed that is determined to better their lives by getting a better education.I am a white American but I'm not proud of so many people any more.I am in my senior year of college and it's been hard for me so I say congrats to everyone wanting and achieving a lot of things that the negative people want to put them down for.Do Not Deport Anyone Need A Ride After The Coyote Gets You Past Check Points?????????

Bevery... or is it Beverly? Not sure... but for a senior at college, your comment is a bit incomprehensible.

Hey Beverly, I'm proud of anyone who comes from nothing and makes something out of themselves and makes all their dreams come true. Thx for commenting on my comment. I hope you're not an english major.

So Dr Juan, what are you American or Mexican? That is the big picture!! You don't seem to care about the rule of law but how the Hispanic race can come into power and take over. Ain't no money going to be left in the till you guys messed up California so why not try for the rest of the country

First of all, Hispanics are NOT a "race". Second, Hispanics have been in the USA before the Anglos came to commit genocide and steal our resources. Lastly, the world is still being created...what you see today, you won't see it tomorrow. LATINOS WILL RULE THE USA!!!

I keep hearing people say they are worried about being "taken over". The last I heard, we all human beings. After a few years of living in Miami my Cuban friends spoke English better than I could. Many times my Cuban friends were helping me with my homework and there was absolutely no difference. My present neighbors are from Puerto Rico and I am learning Spanish so that I can communicate with them in their language. They know very little English because they are elderly and so I will learn Spanish as a courtesy to them. My life has been enriched by my many diverse friends.

This is a legitimate concern. It’s been stated in the past and that’s exactly what happens. Thankfully however with one exception those groups assimilated and now contribute to new version of the country. The worry with this news group is the outright refusal to assimilate. For example.. I recently visited D.C. While walking to my destination I passed 2 local elementary schools. The signs for both were completely written in Spanish.

I am in awe of the latinos who have raised themselves out of poverty by educating themselves. I have lived in cities where I was in the minority. As a result, I have a great deal of compassion and respect for people who came here from other countries and managed to rise about all the difficulties and then make and contribution to society.

That's a little arrogant to assume you can vote someone out and the rest of us will just sit by and watch. You are growing but it is not up to you and you alone who is in office and will stay in office, don't get ahead of yourself. Like I said, I'm all for empowerment but for everyone group. You complain about white people but from the tone of your blog is sounds like your getting ready to do the same. No, you will not be outing anybody because everybody has a vote and its not the concern of one group but all, America has so many citizens of different ethnic backgrounds that change is inevitable and should include all. Latinos you are not all from Mexican but from diverse places, your needs may not be the same as Puerto Rican, etc. Don't complain about white arrogance when your beginning to sound the same.
