Penn State sorority sisters denigrate Mexicans in party photo

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) – Penn State has had its share of controversy for a while, but this week it is getting some more unwanted attention.

The university's Chi Omega sorority chapter is under investigation after a photo with Mexican stereotypes surfaced on a social media site.

It shows a group of sorority members dressed in ponchos and sombreros and wearing fake mustaches. One woman holds a sign that says: "Will mow lawn for weed + beer." Another sign says: "I don't cut grass. I smoke it."

The photograph was taken at a Mexican-themed party around Halloween, according to the independent college blog, Onward State. It was posted last week on Tumblr.

The university's Panhellenic Council said it had received concerns about the photo and that the council does not condone derogatory behavior from members.

"The Penn State Panhellenic Council recognizes the offensive nature of the photo and is therefore taking the matter very seriously," the executive board said in a statement.

Everybody knows how they roll at Penn State, just look at the Athletic Program if ever you need reference. No one cares about the "Penn State" connection; the school has lost all prominenece and this is what should be expected from those, smart, smart Sorority girls and did anyone notice the Asian girl on the right, what was she doing............

Seriously. People need to lighten up and stop taking everything in this world so offensively. Move on already....it's college life. These girls did nothing criminal. It was a private Halloween them party. Every race has been poked fun of including the Jews, Polish, Black and Chinese. Get a sense of humor and smoke some weed to lighten up. Everybody is way too uptight. Geez you fart the wrong way and people get offended these days.

I think it's funny how people get away with using negative connotations as a joke about specific races. If a group of Latina females from a sorority were dressing themselves in German, Irish, or any other Anglo native dress and making jokes about their race, this would be seen as a serious offense and would not be tolerated. These people and their immature behavior is the reason that stereotypes and racism still exist. If we want to be realistic, the statistics state that it is the white population that is most likely to be rapists, serial killers, and incestuous. Would those costumes be acceptable and tolerated if worn by another race to imitate the white race?

      No.

Mexican is not a race, German is not a race, Irish is not a race, etc.

      Try again.

College students, and in particular Fraternity and Sorority members, have been doing tasteless, offensive things for many, many years. This is just another one, but this one is getting blown up by the media. Say it's offensive, everyone agrees it is, and then just move on. Let it drop.

This was not a very good idea for those girls to do that. So many people could be offended by this.
