Driver says he did all he could during Florida school bus beating

(CNN) - The windmilling fists and stomping feet rain down blows on the 13-year-old boy.
Trapped on the floor between the bus seats, he cries out as he receives fierce punch after vicious kick from the three bigger, older youths.
As the relentless assault unfolds, the driver of the Florida school bus alerts the dispatcher, pleading for aid.
But he doesn't physically step in to help.
The bus driver, at least according to his school's policy, did nothing wrong.
'Get somebody here quick'
The attack took place July 9 in Pinellas County, Florida. But the horrific cell phone video - and the surveillance video - came out only recently.
As the boy is pummeled, the bus driver John Moody yells at the assailants to leave the boy alone.
He also asks dispatchers to send help.
"You gotta get somebody here quick, quick, quick, quick," he says. "They're about to beat this boy to death over here."
"Please get somebody here quick. There's still doing it," he adds. "There's nothing I can do."
Moody, 64, says he was too afraid to step in.
"The three boys just jumped on him and started pounding on him. And I did all can," he told CNN affiliate WFLA. "I was looking. It was like I was in shock. I was petrified."
Not required to intervene
The ferocity of the attack left the 13-year-old with two black eyes and a broken arm.
"There was clearly an opportunity for him to intervene and or check on the welfare of the children or the child in this case and he didn't make any effort to do so," Chief Robert Vincent of Gulfport Police Department told the affiliate.
According to Pinellas County school policy, the bus driver isn't required to intervene, only to call dispatch.
He can step in, if he feels it's safe.
Other counties actually forbid drivers from physically stopping fights.

CNN is Racist! They withheld the race of the kids in this story...It would have been the perfect story to balance the race baiting of the Trayvon Martin case. Comparing the reaction to the two stories could have really started a discussion about who is really racist in this country!

This is one of the most disgusting videos I have ever seen, This 13 yr old reports to the school that these rejects tried to sell him drugs and he almost dies because of it? They beat him to a pulp and rob him?? This punks should get the death penalty for this, it is only getting worse, I would also hold the weak and scared bus driver accountable for this as well as the punks parent or parents. Folks the bus driver did nothing wrong. The man is 64 years old and intervention would have got him the same treatment by these three thugs and left no one to try and get help called, the bus from a hijacked by a kid or same kids who cowardly beat a 13 year old smaller boy. When I was in school three on one that are older and bigger would have been viewed as total cowardice by every kid on the bus and an older kid would have stepped in and kick some tails to stop it. Today with the gangs no one gets involved as you may be shot. What we need is to stop the village mentality and put fathers in the home who teach their kids how to behave. Back in the day these three would not need police intervention the kids would handle them and their fathers when they got home beat their hind ends for this cowardly display of character. Fathers have to be involved with raining their kids. Sad state we are in when folks want to all holler racism black or white and we have all had enough of it. The news should get off the racism nonsense as should the same old tired, lame so called racial activist that mislead their communities with everything being racial.
Here is a test. The next time you see or hear someone doing or saying something that is wrong and intolerable, speak up. Do this regardless of whether this is a friend, a family member, a stranger, someone whom you agree with 99% of the time, and keep doing it. Do this whether it means you will be ostracized or greatly criticized. After watching and reading about what happen to the 13 yr old child, I'm shaking head to toe from anger and crying tears from disbelief that ANYONE on that bus did NOTHING to STOP the THREE older boys from picking on ONE child younger, and for the bus driver to say he did ALL he could do is very much an understatment. EVERY parent sends their children to school because they think it is safe, there's enough people to watch out for their children constantly, only to be told later that yes your child got into an unfair fight and got the S*** stomped out of them, but hey we called for help, then watched the show, hope you don't mind. That school as well as the bus driver, the three boys and their parents should all be held accountable for what had happened. I keep hearing about how bad bullying has gotten, and the things we are doing to stop bullying, APPARENTLY it ain't working. Back to the bus driver: I do agree with one other comment on here: why on earth do they hire bus drivers who CAN NOT (because of age, health issues, etc.) maintain order on their bus, as seen in video the bus driver claims he did everything he could, I believe if he'd jerked their little a**es by their arms and dared them to continue it might of put some fear in their minds, maybe enough to stop. My question of the school district is why are you having a 64 yrs old reired man drive a bus with at risk children. Children that are known not to follow the rules and are disruptive.

Those thugs were not the usual riders of that bus........ they only got on it because they knew that kid would be there. It was a revenge beating for allegedly reporting them for selling drugs on school grounds. So another question is why did the driver even let them on the bus? How did the thugs get the idea/info that this 13 yr old kid reported them?

I want to know if CNN plans on featuring this story to the extent that they did the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman story. When I saw the video and heard the report of this school bus incident, I was furious and nauseated. Since the initial story 2 days ago, I've seen or heard nothing else on CNN about it. Why? If this were an African-American child being beaten by 3 older white children, CNN would bombard us with reports about it and race would be mentioned in every report. Gee, it might have even encouraged CNN to feature another one-sided show like The N Word. I am sick to death of this double standard!

I was watching the Piers Morgan interiew with the bus driver. He called the three 15 y/o black boys that were viciously attacking the 13 y/o white boy, thugs. That is funny since he never called Trayvon Martin, a 17 y/o that could have kicked all three of the 15 y/o boys butt, a thug. Now, after watching this attack on video, you have some understanding of what George Zimmerman went through. To bad the 13 y/o wasn't allowed to carry concealed.

The driver keeps quoting that it's policy not to touch the kids... It is policy to tell the kids to get back in there seats....he didn't even do that! He didn't even try to stop this. All he did was protect himself and his job. COWARD!
The blame lies with the bullies who beat this young man, NOT the bus driver! Bullies should not be allowed to ride the school bus and jeopardize the safety of other students. Parents of students who bully other students should be required to provide their own transportation for their kids! School administration needs to enforce severe consequences on these bullies, and beef up security on the bus by having another adult on the bus who is trained in dealing with conflicts.

Im calling for the school bus drivers head on a platter! This man should be arrested and charged. He is a prime example of a person who takes a job working with children when his only concern is his paycheck. He should be fired immediately, arrested and sued for everything he has. You don't take a job working with children if you wouldn't step up to the plate to save ones life in a situation like this. The only reason he even called it in to dispatch is because he knew he'd be fired if he didn't. He did nothing to help this child. All he did was protect himself and his job. He is a coward and should not be allowed to be around our children. What he did was criminal and he deserves to be punished right along with the assailants. I am outraged!
Are you kidding me Lori!! The bus driver is NOT a cop, and he did exactly what he was supposed to do by calling the police immediately. Had he got physically involved in the fight, he would have put all the other students on the bus in danger by leaving the vehicle unattended. The blame for this terrible incident falls on the bullies who inflicted the beating. School administration needs to do a better job at keeping kids safe during school hours – maybe having another adult on the bus who is trained in dealing with conflicts. AND WHERE ARE THE PARENTS!!!!! School and town officials need to collaborate in providing training for parents and changing this dysfunctional culture of bullying.

We keep acting as if we can have it both ways. We say to schools, "Give children voice, and children have rights" Ok. While we are trying to tell students to decide what they want to do and are telling school officials and adults to increase standards and accountability, we sound as if we are disturbingly bi-polar and living in serious denial. We keep giving children adult decision-making power; then we turn around and tell them to act as accountable and pliable children. Few adults have the capacity to manage humility after being given power. How do we expect children to navigate a world of multiple adult-choices. We don't give children adult choices because we believe it makes them better prepared. For the most part, we make such choices because we are becoming a society of abdicating adults who do not want to do the tough work of preparing children for responsible adulthood. The worse part is that we are making the education system complicit in this mis-education and mal-preparation. In this case, if the bus driver had intervened in the fight, he would be facing a lawsuit and many more 5th quarter analysis' which fail to take into account that, yes, it would have been brave for him to step in, but we would be vilifying him if he had intervened more forcefully and was put in a position where he had to defend himself. Some racially anxious people would have said, "The thugs deserved it!" Some out of touch, unconscious civil servants would have said, of the bullies becoming victims, "but they're just kids." There is a degree of truth in both statements, but we should hardly expect everyone to act with heroism when many of us rarely possess such a characteristic. In the greater scope of the message of this situation, we need to understand that we can hardly blame young people for their actions which mirror those of adults we excuse and at times glorify in the media and the greater society. Robert Browning said, "When the fight begins within himself, a man's worth something." We need to practice some introspection as a society because we are hardly asking for any integrity or accountability – unless a person can afford a good attorney. The boys were wrong, the driver made a decision, and we create policies that are ambiguous and paralyzing. Who is at fault?
What about the OTHER STUDENTS ON THE BUS? How come THEY just sat there? How come THEY didn't stop these 3 guys? THEY didn't even make an attempt. What a bunch of inhuman animals they all were/are.

I have heard this story several times today.......Where are the parents??? I think the gentleman did what he could...He is 64 years old and about too retire....Who knows what injuries these 3 15 years olds unruly teenagers could have done.........I think the blame is for those who commited the offense .....and the parents......................not the driver
Complex situation. If the driver leaves his seat then another student can tamper with the bus controls. If he touches a student even if intervening he can be sued. Bus drivers do not get paid enough to undergo SECURE training which a way to de-escalate a confrontation where you first step between the combatants and try to defuse by talking it through. The next step is to wrap your arms around the most aggressive student but in this case there are three and bus safety is again a concern. From the video he should have, at least, been a bit more vocally forceful but this is after the fact and easy to say. At the time it was either a very rare unexpected event with no time to think it through or the driver should have (always) be alert for talk building toward a confrontation.
On the video you can see the three attackers out of their seats standing over the victim before the attack begins. This is where the bus driver should have made them get back in their seats... The driver doesn't even ask them to! This is criminal!
The driver, I suspect, didn't intervene because he was afraid he might be physically attacked or sued if he did–and if that's true, he probably had good reason to feel that way.
I graduated from Pinellas County schools in 1981. I was a victim of being bullied on the bus (not physically, thank goodness, just verbally) and ended up having my father drive me to school during the latter half of my senior year. My father retired from Pinellas County schools in 1992 (due to illness) and when I asked him if he regretted not teaching, he said, "No. It was getting pretty bad."

It is ridiculous that a big built bus driver would sit in his safe driver's seat and watch while a 13-year old is being injured. He is an idiot. Why did the school board hire an idiot? I'd bet that if his son were in the same spot and was injured while a grownup watched, he'd be contacting the ACLU, a lawyer and anyone else who would listen tol his complaining that his son was beaten up because he was black. I'm so sick of that. I was once assaulted by a fourteen year old on a public bus in Long Beach, California when I was I was eighty years old. The driver did nothing. She was black as well as the young girl. All the passengers were women and they kept their heads facing the front of the bus while that hefty built girl pummeled me with an umbrella, causing a lot of damage. The driver wouldn't even call the police. When the nasty girl got off the bus, I did too and someone who saw my bloody face and my condition called the police. The driver never did. This is how it goes. I'm sick of people hollering racial discrimination when they are the ones practicing it. Recently, a black limo driver refused to understand the Filipina women in the back seat hollering about the smoke coming from the back seat. He didn't stop. Five of those women died due to his stupidity. After the limo burned on the side of the freeway, his crocodile tears came and he said he wish he could have done more. The man's wife recently told the news agencies that the reason for his doing nothing was the fact that he and she were having a furious fight on their cellphones. Why is he on a cellphone on the job? Never heard if he was fired. People these days are dumber and dumber. Wouldn't the driver of the school bus want someone to intervene if his son were being beaten by more than one boy? You betcha! What a bunch of self-centered people have evolved over time! I'm old but I would jump in and help. A slap on the back of one's hands or on the nose by a set of keys can get the offender's attention, I never dreamed that in my old age people would have become so insensitive. I hope that the driver of that bus gets fired but he probably won't as the inept, the stupid, the out-to-lunch bunch stay on the job which is patterned after our federal government. Conversely, why aren't parents talking to their children? I never had teenage problems although I had five boys and two girls. Never once did I go see a principal or teacher about any bad behavior. Trainiing begins at an early age and at home. My grandchildren are being taught the same way I was. You do what you know. My son in an eastern state drives his son to schooll and picks him up due to the idiotic culture in his neighborhood. Wish there was a law whereby parents could be charged with the bad actions of their offspring. Sure would eliminate a lot of police work.
Audrey, you are the idiot. The bus driver wasn't big built, he's 64 years old and honestly the only thing that would have happened was he would have been beaten as well. In all honesty, he probably was in a bit of shock. To say what you would have done in that situation is a bit arrogant.
The people responsible for the assault are the 3 boys. Period. It would be better in general if people (as a whole) would step in as a group to help in that situation- the whole bus, not just the bus driver.

It doesn't matter how old the driver is... He chose a job as an authority figure on that bus that in itself obligates him to do more. If he didn't want to or was incapable of helping a child who was being brutally beaten by three older bigger teenagers on the bus he is in charge of then he needed to choose a different profession like driving a garbage truck for instance... That way he could be correct in not caring about the "cargo" he drives around.

All Black people are no more responsible for evil in our society or what some girl did to you than All Whites are for slavery or other multiple atrocities perpetuated against Blacks. People do some bad things, but we can hardly see clearly enough to solve real problems if we through such smoke bombs as your previous post. What happened to the USA. Where are the parents? I blame the left..... the break down of the family unit, family nucleus. if these boys had a father at home and this happened. they would be fearful for their lives. It does not take a village. It takes a father at home that will bring you up to respect and behave like a normal human being.
It takes a father that will take you to church and instill faith. It takes a father role model. It take discipline. This country is falling apart. The lefts push to secularism and enabling the increase of single mom homes is the reason this place is falling apart.

It's the boys' that were beating the kids fault. Focus on putting them in jail for a long enough time to give them the opportunity to reflect on their actions or at least a long time away from the public.

I have an idea. Lets stop making laws that deal with this. How about we start making families with a father figure a priority. Stop with the it takes a village B&$$ S(#@ it takes a father who will kick your ass if you don't behave. The left is destroying the country and you say put them in jail. Sure and find the father and tell him what a great job he did......if you can find him.

Please stop thinking that all answers to such acts in society are perpetrated by people only on the right or the left, by boys or girls that come from single or two parent homes, or that jails will solve all problems. Do we glorify mobsters, gangsters, train robbers, and others? Some of us do. Who is the judge of which of these men were worthy to be glorified in print or video? There must be integrity. There must be integrity among individuals as well as systems. Without such integrity we will find that we have camps of people committing acts of disrespect and disregard for people who do not think like, act like, look like, or speak like us. Like those who were from the far country in Jesus' story of the Prodigal Son, we will find ourselves treating anyone who is not one of us like someone who is less than us. This does not demonstrate integrity which is clear and pure regardless of the on lookers or the recipient. This demonstrates a lack of character which are to evident today in people on both the left, right, and even those in between. Integrity does not belong to a group on the left or the right.. It is possessed by people who are possessed by the desire to do right whether people are looking or not, whether people agree with them or not. Their judge is an understanding of their responsibility to do right. Without integrity, there will be mistrust. Where there is mistrust, there exists the potential for upheaval and corruption – those who can will exploit it for their own benefit and many others of us will join their camps and their causes as if they represent absolute truth or absolute right.

It has been ridiculous. Each of us has our level of tolerance. There is so much which should have never been tolerated, but adults change the rules so they can be excused for acting like children. We have openly and fervently excused the behavior of so many irresponsible adults that children and young adults recognize that there no absolute rights and wrongs any more. The children did not make it so. It was adults who wanted to make good character and integrity ambiguous aspirations so that we end up with absolute relativism which is anarchy by relative-right-not-really-wrong proxy. Many of us are eager to excuse those who are most like us and quick to vilify those who are least like us. This does not demonstrate integrity; it does demonstrate a very shaky or non-existent moral balance – lack of integrity.
